I work with individuals and couples who are dealing with personal issues, marital difficulties, communication with their partner, life transitions, family conflict, career obstacles, anxiety. In a safe, confidential, supportive space I help clients to better understand themselves and their situations. I am an interactive therapist who listens well and asks questions to make you think and see your issues in a different way. We explore patterns, reactions and experiences. We understand how the past informs the present and how present challenges can be a moment for change.

Trust is the foundation of any successful relationship. Without it, communication breaks down and conflict rears its head. Hal has mentored couples counselors for thirty years, and has himself been a couples counselor since 1978. Through his decades of experience, he has cultivated strategies and techniques to help couples rebuild trust and strengthen their bond. One of Hal's key teachings is the importance of vulnerability in a relationship. He encourages couples to open up and share their deepest fears and insecurities with each other. This kind of vulnerability creates a safe space where both partners feel heard and supported.

You're trapped in a relentless cycle that stops you from engaging with the world. Unseen threats keep you tense. Some days, a fog of uncertainty, persistent buzzing, and internal chatter overwhelm you. On others, feelings of detachment render you invisible, even among loved ones, even to yourself. Confusion, self-doubt, and worthlessness weave narratives about yourself and the world that are hard to shake. Beneath is a yearning for clarity, connection, confidence, calm, and safety, likely the reason you are here. This emotional seesaw, a reaction to stress, leads to states often mislabeled as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or addiction.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
