Sometimes we encounter hardships that seem too overwhelming or painful to manage. These struggles may occur in marriage, family relationships, parenting, at work, or coping with every-day life. They can be destabilizing, leaving us feeling hopeless and helpless. I believe these uncomfortable emotions can often be a window of opportunity to look deeper into what has happened, our role in it, and our reaction to it. Within these moments, we can unravel our own inner wisdom to help us heal and grow.

Human experiences such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, life transitions, family of origin issues, relational issues, trauma, abuse, and neglect can often lead to feelings of being stuck, social isolation, struggles with meaning making and spirituality, unmet needs, lack of self-awareness, incongruence, and hopelessness. Counseling can be an amazing resource in such times because we all deserve to be heard and seen in a safe place.

No matter the stage of life, there are always challenges to tackle. Some challenges are visible, such as the loss of a loved one, parenting, or relocating to a new city. Other challenges are not so visible –like worrying too much, struggling to feel connected to others, or just lacking the motivation to get through the day. Figuring out who we are or what makes life meaningful requires exploration, and this can be difficult to navigate alone. Moreover, exploration requires a safe and accepting environment, free from bias and judgment.

We ALL need a therapist, whether we like to admit it or not. We’re either struggling with our internal dialogue or external actions and behaviors, having the space and freedom to say what we wish to but can’t/won’t goes a long way in helping us feel more like us.

I aim to empower others like me who have constantly heard “it is not okay to go to therapy and share your personal life with anyone,” to help shift this tabooed narrative into a more positive one. It is OKAY to share your personal life with someone who can help build that trusting relationship with you, and it is also okay to express your feelings and emotions without feeling the pressures of shame and guilt. I use the space we create together to encourage deconstructing harmful internalized messages, processing experiences of attachment and trauma, and managing relational and personal challenges.

I take a relational-cultural and somatic approach that draws from Polyvagal theory, mindfulness, attachment theory, and Internal Family Systems.
Accepting new clients! My practice as a social worker and therapist is grounded in the belief that the most effective treatment, and transformative healing, takes place within relationships- in the therapy room, and in our communities. Nurturing a therapeutic alliance rooted in connection, safety, and radical acceptance is central to my approach. As a saathi (companion, ally) on your healing journey, I am here to offer care and support as you process and integrate your experiences, navigate current challenges, and develop your innate strengths along with new skills.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
