As a practicing psychologist my role is to use my training and experience to assist the client with making changes that will improve their personal satisfaction with everyday life. I work in a collaborative manner to help individuals clarify their difficulties and set reasonable goals to achieve problem resolution. Each client brings their own unique circumstances to the counseling session. Relationships, depression, anxiety, loss, trauma, communication, family conflict, and addictive behaviors are some of the common themes that are addressed in counseling.

I bring my expertise in child, adolescent and family to your expertise about your experience, so that we can work together to create an individualized plan that reflects who you or your children are to help you reach your goals for you and your family.
It takes a lot of courage to decide to look for help. It shouldn’t have to feel even riskier finding a therapist who you are comfortable with. I want you to feel like we are a good fit because therapy is like a long hike; sometimes there are steep inclines, sometimes there are beautiful views, but you definitely don’t want to hike with someone you’re not meshing with. Because this is so important, I offer a free initial 30 minute consultation, where you can come, meet me and get an idea of how I would approach working with you to find a way through what you are struggling with.

I work with clients individually, but also as a family unit.
As a mother of three, and a counselor for over 20 years, I know how difficult it is to grow up in this world today. Therapy provides a safe space to work through those things in our lives that are difficult. I specialize in working with children, adolescents and young adults. I use play therapy, art therapy and talk therapy with my clients. I strive to offer hope and solutions to families with children dealing with such issues as trauma, grief, loss, abuse, depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, self harm, and much more. My clients are also those that need solutions for navigating behavior, peer relations, ADHD, ODD or autism.

You don't have to suffer in siIence anymore. In our fast changing world, finding balance can be difficult and may even seem impossible at times. Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and the thoughts of giving up make it hard to push forward when you have conflicting goals, objectives, and situations in your life. They can seem to happen all at once, and it feels like they are all demanding our energy, thoughts, and immediate choices in order to progress and change. Anxious or depressing thoughts and feelings accompany the trying times of life, and therapy can be a way to get yourself and/or your family up to optimal functioning.

I am also trained in Family Systems approaches.
Each of us has a point in which people, issues and situations can become overwhelming and we reach a breaking point. It is at this place I would like to meet you and help you through your difficulties to a place of healing and safety. The issues, situations and things that have happened to you do not have to define who you are as a person or continue to hold power over you.

As a counselor, I want to help you and your family to learn and grow. With everything going on, it may feel like you are just surviving, when you deserve to THRIVE! I believe in working with the ‘big picture’, considering the mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual domains that affect a person’s health and wellness. Each client is unique, and as such, the treatment plan will be tailored to suit your specific strengths and needs.

Currently Accepting New Clients. I am an interpersonal process/person-centered therapist. I believe that many clients experience mental health concerns that are interpersonal in nature. This could include relationships with spouse/partner, family, siblings, co-workers, employers, God and/or SELF. Within relationships we experience our emotions and our therapeutic relationship becomes a tool for addressing these concerns. I tend to be a direct therapist and share my feelings, thoughts and reactions. I use a lot of metaphor and narrative in therapy and expect clients to come prepared to talk about things in therapy.

I view persons as made up of emotions, thoughts, relationships, biology, and our spiritual selves. Consequently, I first help you stabilize by making necessary changes in behavior. Medical or neurological contributions and possible nutritional deficiencies are examined. I address any distorted thinking that is contributing to your emotional pain. If systems in your life (family, work, school) are a factor, they are also addressed. Finally, we work with the larger questions of existence (spiritual issues, issues of purpose/ meaning), which are all vital to mental health. All areas are dealt with from a solid grounding in the science.

I have a good "grapevine" of local professionals, so I often help clients with information/referral to resources for on-going support beyond therapy. I welcome questions you may have. I can be reached by text at 979-255-7004 or email at ruthhelpertnunez@gmail.com. Also, please check out my Facebook page. I accept new clients as I have time slots available. I offer some evening appointments, as well as afternoon appointments, but no weekends. I will be semi-retiring in 2024, but will continue to maintain a small practice.

No one enjoys feeling trapped, incapable of escape, and unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This is all the more true when the bonds of our entrapment are made up of our mind, our relationships, and our circumstances. While there is a limit to what each person has control over in their lives, many have control over far less than what they are capable of. My goal is to help you increase your power over yourself, closing the gap between where you are and where you could be.

****Currently Accepting New Clients **** Meeting the Clients where they are… Searching out and seeking help from a mental health professional can be scary and overwhelming. I believe the key to building a strong therapeutic alliance is meeting the client where they are. As a therapist my role is to provide non-judgmental unconditional positive regard, to help my client with exploring and overcoming life’s challenges. The therapeutic process is meant to be an empowering and enlightening experience. As a therapist, I meet my client in a dark, confusing place and we journey together to a place of peace and inner well-being.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
