I chose to focus my training in marriage and family therapy because I truly believe that our problems stem from a breakdown in relationship.
Have you asked questions like this? “Why can’t my spouse understand me?” “Why don’t I love you the like in the beginning?” Then you have already started the work of building a better relationship. You are on the path to discovering how powerful healthy relationships are.

This work is meaningful to me because I get to walk alongside people breaking free of painful patterns and moving towards feeling comfortable with life and themselves. As a counselor I have extensive experience in working with people struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic pain and addictions. I utilize mindfulness-based approaches to help clients cultivate mind-body awareness and create emotional well-being. Getting to underlying issues of shame, loss of control and grief changes lives. When therapy works, there's more than just insight; people feel it in their body as well as in their mind.

Everybody struggles or gets stuck in their life at times and may need support. I am a practical, energetic, and experienced guide for those struggling and/or stuck. I base my work on the importance of human connection and creating a “safe place” for people to share. Laughter and mindful presence are essential therapeutic ingredients.

All psychological issues are ultimately existential in origin, entailing a confrontation with death, loss, meaning, purpose and value. All that we do (knowingly or unknowingly) is dedicated to deciphering these daunting and irrepressible demands of existence. Few are successful in resolving or even clearly conceptualizing these existential issues and their minds inevitably descend into despair, depression and anxiety. Some seek to assuage their suffering with psychoactive substances (illicit and licit) and this leads only to addiction and abdication of autonomy over one's authentic self. My System offers a solution.

I work with most ages (12-late 50's), but specialize in adolescents and families searching to improve their relationship with their emotions as well as the most important people in their lives. I utilize a family-orientated approach informed by my experience that no one can truly be understood without the context of their upbringing and important relationships. We'll reflect on the themes from your childhood and how it affects you in the present day. Working through these critical experiences while building skills to manage the feelings in the here and now are key to feeling better and improving your relationship with yourself.

The systemic approach of family and marital counseling is near and dear to my heart.
We were created to be relational, in marriage, parenting, friendship, or business. Relationships were created to illuminate our strengths and highlight areas of improvement. Let's join in a therapeutic relationship to aid in a better you. A You that is less angry, more peaceful. A You that is less anxious and more focused and calm. A You that is healed from disappointment and pain. A You that finds hope after months or years of hopeless and helplessness. We cannot be of good service to others unless we have unity and peace within. Let's begin again today, together.

I love working with childhood developmental challenges such as autism, behavior modification, or family dynamics and have successfully helped children and families get around obstacles.
I believe that everything we do and are as people makes sense when we understand the context of our lives. Every area of one’s life affects another in some way, shape, or form. Therefore, I find it quite helpful to explore the areas of physical, emotional, and other areas of health to put all the pieces together to make a complete puzzle picture. With an accurate picture, it may feel as though things begin to “click” and “make sense.” With an accurate framework, we can begin to address the root of the issues you might be experiencing at the pace that you are comfortable with so that foundational progress can take place.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
