Hello and thank you for taking the time to view my profile! The decision to enter into counseling is an important step on the road to wellness and self-discovery. As we move along our journey in life, we sometimes encounter bends in the road that impact us in difficult ways. At times it may be difficult to catch up with yourself, and when you finally do, it can seem overwhelming. Life can be full of concerns, struggles, and difficulties that cause anxiety, depression, peer and family/marital conflicts.

I use a combination of internal family systems and acceptance and commitment therapy to support clients while they navigate complex emotional responses, build healthier behavioral patterns, or learn to love all parts of themselves.
It is a fundamental rule in nature that creatures are born with skills they need to survive: fish are born swimming, caterpillars have the ability to make their cocoon without instruction, and birds have the instinct to escape their shells. And people, we are born with the ability to ask for help. So why does it become harder and harder to ask for help as we grow up? Emotional responses are as complex and natural as you are, but sometimes in that complexity, they can be difficult to navigate on your own.

I specialize in helping individuals overcome negative mood symptoms - such as depression and anxiety - that are often related to common life stressors, such as social, marital, or family discord, work-related conflicts, health problems, and financial concerns.
I believe that we are primarily social beings and that our relationships, past and present, continuously impact our growth as individuals. Humans are highly resilient, and we tend to persevere through negative experiences. However, certain relationships can have long-lasting negative consequences on how we see ourselves and engage with the people in our lives. When this happens, people often find themselves in a dysfunctional and frustrating pattern of maladaptive thinking and behavior that results in persistent interpersonal struggles.

I have witnessed first-hand how family life has changed over the past 30 years.
Understanding yourself can sometimes be the most difficult thing to struggle with. It's as though we have a blindspot when it comes to self. It can be helpful to seek out a more objective view. I can offer support, validation, and insight in a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere.

I conduct CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), TF-CBT (trauma-focused CBT), ABA (behavioral therapy), solution-focused therapy, and structural and strategic family therapy. I love learning about neurobiology and the effects that stress has on the brain. Interpersonally, a client coming into session with me can expect to encounter a warm, compassionate, and encouraging soul who has a dry sense of humor and tends to address problems in a straightforward manner.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
