A multi-generarational history of family trauma, combined with current stressors and physiological vulnerability, often underlie a variety of adolescent/adult difficulties, including anxiety/depression, addictions, and relationship issues.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience in both clinic and private practice settings. I have a wide range of clinical interests and expertise including trauma/bereavement, autistic spectrum disorders, parenting issues, and individual adult relational psychoanalysis. I am trained in parent-infant psychotherapy as intervention at the earliest ages can prevent/lessen the impact of potential risk factors that can derail a child's development. I integrate Stanley Greenspan's DIR/Floortime model with attachment-based play therapy. This integrative approach addresses both the child's social-emotional and sensory cognitive functioning,

Psychodynamic individual, couples and family therapy combine with specialized trauma techniques for exceptional challenges in living.
During Covid-19 isolation, we are all experiencing exaggerations of our interpersonal difficulties. Phone or video session are available, to explore your personal responses to these other-worldly times. Interpersonal psychotherapy is a collaborative endeavor of discovering how you feel about yourself, your relationships, past, present and future. Curiosity, empathy and specialized skills can help you to figure out how to minimize/resolve the personal roadblocks that interfere with living the meaningful life you choose. During these stressful times, even a few consults might address and assuage personal adaptations.

I also focus on anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, interpersonal challenges, family conflict and boundary setting.
Through my experience as a therapist, I have learned that asking stimulating questions in a trusting, safe, non-judgmental space empowers people to process past experiences and understand how that history impacts relationships and decision-making today. My approach to therapy is focused on a positive and collaborative therapeutic relationship and my belief that everyone has the ability to conquer their fears and overcome hardships.

We will work together towards resolving symptoms and challenges such as anxiety, depression, self-defeating behaviors, parenting and family challenges, relationships issues, navigating life transitions, post-traumatic stress.
My goal is to foster a collaborative environment to explore areas of your life where you may feel challenged, anxious and/or stuck, and to create new understandings that lead to curiosity, self-awareness, and self-compassion. Through this exploration we will identify old patterns of behavior and beliefs that have been limiting you and begin to move forward in your life. Therapy can be a wonderful opportunity to expand your self-awareness, have better communication and more satisfaction.

"PSYCHOLOGY WITH A SOUL" Are you seeking change, are you in crisis, does your life seem to be falling apart? I can help you ease the suffering that exists. I work through issues by understanding Relationship: with the self, your family, love relationships, friends and colleagues, and how to sustain them. Another major transitional life issue is finding your purpose and creating a vision of the future, which are the keynotes to happiness. I am informed by a number of techniques: Attachment Focused EMDR. positive, psychodynamic, relational and transpersonal psychology; however, "love in action" is the focal point of the work.

In addition to working with adults, I have extensive experience treating children and adolescents across individual, family and group modalities.
My practice is centered on collaborating with my clients. I listen closely and explore carefully in order to develop a space in which my clients and I can come to a deeper understanding of what is interfering with their wishes and goals. Whether the struggle involves depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, emotion regulation or interpersonal issues, I offer a warm and empathic environment to facilitate the expression of difficult thoughts and feelings. Throughout my graduate and post-graduate training, I have found that using a flexible approach best enables my clients to work thru fixed or destructive patterns.

I bring an array of training and experience to my work: relational psychoanalysis, cognitive-behavioral techniques, knowledge of Buddhist and other meditation traditions and training in family systems theory and couples counseling.
There is no simple formula for helping people but there are necessary elements: an atmosphere of safety and respect, and openess to and curiosity about the uniqueness of each person. Therapy is essentially a series of conversations in which you and I create meaningful solutions to problems and difficulties in living. The opportunity provided by therapy for greater self awareness allows people to stop self defeating behavior and destructive patterns of living and to get on with making the best use of their time and talents.

I operate from a Somatic Internal Family Systems framework and a harm-reduction/abolitionist lens, and am trained in EMDR.
Self-compassion is a great buzzword, but it's easier said than done. Sometimes you have to avoid or fight feelings and parts of yourself. Maybe you feel overwhelmed, worn out or conflicted. Maybe you are not satisfied with your core relationships. This could be because parts of you are stuck in past experiences and those parts are using the tools they have (like avoidance, self-criticism, anxiety...) to protect you from more pain, even though these tools don't always serve you now. Together, we can welcome and get to know each part of you slowly and safely, and introduce new tools for coping and making change.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
