Utilizing social justice and trauma-informed approaches, I help people of all ages in English and Spanish working through complex diagnoses, substance use, different forms of violence, forced migration, family systems, abuse, as well as exploring sexuality, non-monogamy, gender, kink, and BDSM.
Hi, my name’s Nicholas (he/they), and I’m a Latinx, Middle Eastern, Jewish, and queer psychotherapist in NYC. My multicultural upbringing, experiences with immigration, and growing up in a low-income household have not only inspired me to help people who are marginalized because of how they identify, but also those who experience systematic violence. Through diverse lived and clinical experiences, I'm able to help you discover your inner thoughts surrounding identities, relationships, and social issues that affect how you show up in the world.

I have found my therapy work most effective with people who are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, and transitions related to relationships, identity, family and career.
Is it just me or has the world felt extremely overwhelming in recent years? It can be hard to just feel stable, let alone attempt to feel happy. There can be so much pressure, both from the world and from ourselves. You need a sense of grounding; an internal anchor that holds you strong while the waves of life thrash. You need to understand yourself, why you make the choices you do, why negative thoughts and default patterns hold you back from the life you want, and how to control the emotions and fears that overwhelm you. Mostly, you deserve to love, respect and accept yourself, just as you are.

I have extensive experience working with young adults striving to live intentional lives full of purpose and meaning in a chaotic world they did not make. My clients experience low self-esteem, cross-generational conflict, anxiety about the future, and sadness about the past. We explore experiences regarding family, feeling loved in intimate relationships, communicating effectively, and questioning spirituality. The clients I work with want to be seen for who they are while feeling comfortable in their skin.

Emma works with folks struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship and family issues, as well as those searching and exploring their personal identities. She finds the deep value of therapy being a dynamic and relational relationship between the therapist and client, and that self expression and curious exploration is where meaning making is found.

At this moment, I am only able to work with individuals and I do not provide couples/relationship/family therapy.
My approach to therapy is rooted in anti-oppression and liberatory principles, seeking to honor each person’s individuality and autonomy. Much of my experience is working with people of color and queer and trans/gender non-conforming people. I am a queer, mixed-race Asian American of Uchinanchu and Ashkenazi Jewish descent, and my therapy space is warm and collaborative, fostering individuals’ ability to build resilience, joy, and power.

I work with people who are part of the LGBTQIA+ communities and allies. My work is rooted in gender-affirming therapy for those seeking exploration and support around their gender identities. I also work with those who are living with addiction and recovery. I work with clients who live, work and play under a cloak of secrecy; the outside world sees them as goal-driven professionals who have stable relationships and a host of family and friends. My clients hide their struggles with Depression, Anxiety, Low Self Esteem, and Substance Use. My clients want to live and love authentically.

For over a decade I have worked with the LGBTQ+ community, adolescents, young adults and adults regarding family & relationship issues, life transitions, career stress/burnout, self image, anxiety, depression and trauma.
For some, therapy provides a space to address an acute crisis, chronic symptoms or to expand awareness of oneself and sometimes a mix of all three. I believe therapy is most impactful when it is tailored to each person’s unique needs and concerns. This looks different for everyone and might even look different throughout your journey. Good therapy can help you to make the changes you have been struggling with, identify the patterns that might be holding you back and ultimately help you to create a more fulfilling life.

The therapeutic space I create is influenced by social work, advocacy, internal family systems therapy and narrative therapy models.
My guiding principle as a therapist is deep listening without judgment (acknowledgement plus acceptance) so that people can feel the freedom to express themselves, explore their experiences and create authentic connection. I believe that listening is an essential tool in healing and feeling valued. My approach is trauma-informed and client-centered, with an anti-oppression lens. I am committed to the lifelong unlearning of colonial structures that are deeply rooted in mental health, and to holding space for others to unpack how societal and institutional structures have impacted their mental health and wellness.

We work with individuals struggling to take steps in their career, social, romantic, and family lives, sexuality, and overall life satisfaction.
Therapy is about both addressing specific issues which may be getting in our way as well as cultivating a healthy curiosity about ourselves, our patterns, and our experiences. Life is wrought with transitions which can catch us off-guard, and it is common to feel unsure as to whether we are on the right path. Thankfully, these can be successfully navigated collaboratively and discreetly through a relationship with a trusted professional. Gaining an understanding of ourselves through identifying our blind spots is the first step in establishing a life that is both purposeful and fulfilling.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
