When faced with anxiety or depression, you often wonder if there is anything you can do to truly feel better or transform yourself. It seems like you’ve tried everything, and nothing has worked. Mood issues are causing other issues -trouble relating with others, over/under eating, problems with work or family relationships or even more serious issues. At times, relationship struggles leave you wondering "should I stay or go?" but it can be hard to navigate this alone. The "real you" is in there, but hard to find.

It takes courage to seek support for yourself or a family member.
My specialty is in helping children/teens who struggle with anxiety, depression, disordered eating, self-harm and difficulty with emotion regulation. I specialize in DBT which is a therapy approach that provides coping skills and strategies that teens and their parents can use to create a happier and healthier life. I have been proving DBT therapy and leading DBT groups for over 15 years. Additionally, I have extensive experience and training in eating disorders and provide Family Based Therapy. In working with teens and children, I believe it's important that parents are involved appropriately in the treatment process.

I provide individual, couples, and family therapy.
I believe in the healing power of relationships. Humans are relational creatures with a wired need to feel accepted. Disconnection in relationships can leave a person feeling hopeless. You can expect me to help you through relational healing. Together, we will look at your relationship to self and how this impacts how you navigate relationships with others. As a systems thinker, I often help clients explore ways to strengthen their sense of belongingness through strengthening relationships with others.

I support my clients in individual, couple's, family, intensive, and group therapy.
It’s okay to ask for what you need. This is something I need to remind myself of on a daily basis. So many of us focus intently on making sure everyone else is taken care of and we completely abandon ourselves and ignore our own needs. This leaves us feeling exhausted, depleted, and quite frankly, resentful because we think to ourselves “why isn’t anyone taking care of me?” I teach my clients what a healthy relationship looks like because if this wasn’t modeled to you at some point throughout your life, no one can expect you to know what it means.

Humanity thrives through relationships, yet these same relationships often spawn challenges creating various levels and types of mental distress. Mental distress leads to second guessing, criticism of self and others, even hopelessness. As a result, gaining a guide to support personal navigation through the situational dynamics are desired in order to gain insight and skills to be confident in steps forward to a better life.

Oftentimes, attempting to disown our difficult stories to appear more whole or acceptable, depends on the integration of all of our experiences, including the falls. Practicing authenticity in times of adversity allows you to learn to face fears and doubts, to be able to reach deeply within yourself to find out what makes your heart sing, your spirit soar, and your soul at peace. My greatest passion is bringing growth and healing to clients to live with intention and authentically empowered to continually learn about themselves, challenge negative beliefs, and sort through emotional baggage.

Do you feel stuck? Reaching out for help may seem frightening, but is a sign of strength. My role as a therapist is to help you rediscover yourself or the parts of you that you've lost. The therapy room is a good place to sift through negative thoughts and disturbing emotions. I believe in the interpersonal process of therapy, the value of the therapeutic relationship, and in working with an individual on a holistic basis, to help him or her alleviate stress and regain a sense of personal freedom.

Asking for help is hard and can be very scary, the fear of judgement, the fear of weakness, the fear of "going crazy". Yet I believe reaching out for help is one of the bravest things anyone can do. I have a passion for working with individuals with trauma. I also have a passion for working with children. It is never too late to start feeling better about being yourself, whether the work starts in childhood or later in life. I want to help people find peace in themselves whether through change or through acceptance.

Sometimes taking care of ourselves is the hardest thing because our lives don't have therapy built in our day. We become masters at believing we are dealing with our struggles, depression, anxiety, yet we never seem to get to a point where we are actually making a change. We see what we are doing isn't working yet we continue to do the same. I work with adults facing a variety of issues such as anxiety, depression, mania, adjustment related issues, relationship issues, divorce and grief/loss. I have over 20 years of experience helping individuals find healthy solutions.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
