Coping with Marital/Family Conflict or Divorce.
I am a queer, Black, fully-licensed therapist (LCSW) with over 10 years of clinical experience. I’ve worked with individuals as they face a terminal diagnosis; with patients who have experienced losses in their relationships and livelihood due to mental illness or a chronic condition; with couples as they navigate role shifts, parenting, and caregiving of elder family members; with clients whose life experience of social marginalization have led to depression; and with those presenting to their primary care doctor for stomach pain and heart palpitations, only to learn that anxiety is the root cause.

Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming. The hardest step is just showing up, and you have already accomplished that! Everyone has different needs and goals - and there is no "one size fits all" approach to therapy. As such, the techniques that I use differ from client to client. We can work collaboratively to address your individual needs and goals! Some of my focus areas include Anxiety, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intergenerational Trauma, Narcissistic Abuse Recovery, Family Trauma, Career Counseling and Stress Management.

Individual, couples and family counseling.
For decades, I've helped people find new paths through their life challenges. By developing a deep client relationship, applying complementary therapeutic approaches, my goal is to help YOU uncover your true potential and power to live a life you enjoy. Do you doubt that is possible? Therapy may consist of practicing skills related to social and emotional learning and learning how your beliefs about life effect everything. Uncovering and navigating your life stories - telling those stories over and over - of depression, trauma, anxiety, loss, and stress helps YOU figure out YOUR path. Want to try?

I work with anxiety, family and marital conflict, life transitions, stress, depression etc.
Have you ever felt like the world was ending or has your mind raced with a million thoughts and worries? Have you ever experienced high conflict in a relationship thinking things will never change? Did you ever struggle to accomplish what you think are basic tasks or lack the motivation to get out of bed in the morning and brush your teeth? Sometimes life can just feel overwhelming. These struggles are more common than you think and you are not alone.

I assist young adults, adults and women of color with repairing generational trauma, family issues, relationship issues, and any issues that life has handed you.
Are you in a dark place and seeking a sense of healing but unsure what to do? Are you afraid to look in the mirror because you have lost sight of the person staring back at you? At some point we have all been in that dark place, but I want to empower you to finally look in the mirror to see yourself again. I have a love for individuals that have been strong friend. The ones who have been the caretakers or the people pleasers in their family or friend group. The ones who often feel forgotten about. So much so, you have forgotten about yourself and your identity. Together, we will work to restore the balance.

I enjoy helping both individuals and couples successfully navigate the inevitable challenges of long term relationships and family life.
You may be educated, even outwardly successful, but struggle to feel good about yourself, have difficulties with close relationships or just want more out of life. I believe it's human to struggle and that we all can benefit from self exploration. You stand to gain, and so does your partner, children, friends, even co-workers when you're bringing more of your best self to the game. My style is active and I bring humor and compassion to help you develop solutions as well as grow from your struggles. A seasoned therapist, my approach is flexible and practical, tailored to meet your needs. I'm LGBTQIA sensitive and welcoming.

I've always wanted to incorporate animals into therapeutic activities. My family has all rescues and I’ve volunteered with APS of Durham for over 10 years. Animal assisted therapy is generally done with the therapist's personal animal. My pre-Covid sessions were typically in home with you and your pet, developing more connection and emotional support. I moved my small practice to primarily tele-health but try to be available and flexible to meet when you need. It’s also important that the therapy is a fit for what you need and you can be yourself. I’m building a therapy space in Hendersonville Fall 2024 onsite sessions..

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
