My passion is in working with individuals and couples in need of resolving relational issues, whether it be in a coupleship, looking to become involved in a coupleship, relational issues with family members, relationships at work, or social relationships.
Addressing challenges in our personal life is not easy. While a common reaction to difficulties and challenges is to attempt to avoid them, it seldom solves the problem. Friends can help with some struggles in life, while other challenges need unbiased, emotional support from a professional. I utilize compassion and practical feedback to help you effectively address these difficulties and challenges. My style of therapy utilizes an eclectic approach to personalize and tailor the therapy to your needs. I help individuals and couples recognize and build on strengths to attain growth and help facilitate change to enrich your life.

For example, I've worked with veterans, teenagers who are suicidal, middle-aged persons facing job/family stresses, grieving older persons, couples in crisis, and those who've suffered in silence too long.
I deliver evidence-based interventions with compassion, genuineness, humor, empathy, and professionalism. You can’t surprise me and I won’t judge you. My goal is to help you heal and develop self-compassion with the skills you need to cope. Every individual is unique and I believe there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to psychological care because you are not your diagnosis. I will draw on your strengths to decrease distress, improve resilience, and work through barriers to experiencing whole-hearted well-being.

My journey to becoming a therapist started in an art room. I attended NCSU's College of Design, which led to teaching high school art for several years. Teaching allowed me to find my calling as a therapist and consultant. I graduated from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social work in 2008, and have since pursued Certifications in Addictions, Self-Compassion, & the work of Dr. Brené Brown. I also have specific training in Emotionally Focused Individual and Family Therapy which is based on attachment theory as well as AEDP, an experiential therapy model that helps heal trauma through corrective emotional experiences.

My name is TaBre’a (Tuh-Bree-Yuh), I’m a Maryland native and moved to North Carolina in 2022. I have been in the social work field since 2018 and have had the privilege of supporting many communities and colorful walks of life. If I am not snuggling with my baby girl, you can find me tuned into a good podcast or cooking some of my favorite meals. I believe that everyone has a story to tell, and I want to hear as many as I can. In a loud world where you might feel silenced, I hear you. I have a master’s degree in social work from Salisbury University. I am presently enrolled at Walden University for my Ph.D. in Human Services.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
