During my education for my bachelors and masters of Social Work , I worked with the Mecklenburg Department of Social Services for 8 years and have firsthand knowledge of a wide variety of issues that people have and how those issues directly relate to family and friends.
My name is Ashley Mills and I am a Licensed Clinical Therapist providing mental health therapy to individuals, couples, adults, and families. I have been in private practice for over 13 years. I focus working with people with anxiety disorders, depression, difficulty coping with changes, and relationship issues. I often work with people who have traumatic experiences, people with grief and loss issues, and people who are on the spectrum of Autism. I am very open minded, nonjudgmental, non-biased, and have a great deal of empathy. I have wanted to be a therapist most of my life and absolutely love what I do.

From the outside looking in, people see someone who “has it together.” Perhaps this is related to your family, job, marriage or community. From the inside looking out, you see a world full of pressures, expectations and a need to cultivate happiness for those in your life, sometimes at the expense of your own sanity. I often hear from clients that they feel “stuck” in the same cycle of life and can’t seem to find satisfaction, despite having many of life’s “checkboxes” marked off. Experiences of chronic anxiety and worry are common though they keep moving through the motions of life.

Emotional pain is an inescapable part of being human. At times, it is manageable but apparent; at others, it is overwhelming and impacts all aspects of our lives. When pain prevents us from experiencing fulfillment and satisfaction, it can be helpful to seek out support. Deciding to start therapy and taking the steps to do so is intimidating to many of us, but overcoming that fear is an important part of making changes that can lead to a more meaningful life. Therapy enriches us by providing space to be heard and understood, teaching us tools to help us succeed, and introducing us to new perspectives.

In the more than 20 years that I have been a therapist, I have honed an eclectic-style of guiding therapy, using the skills that I have in the best interest of meeting the needs of my clients. I feel as though what sets me apart from other therapists is my drive to help clients deal with the things they struggle with. When I entered college, I initially wanted to be a psychiatrist, but I decided I didn't want to simply prescribe pills: I wanted to know people and to help them. So I chose psychology instead of psychiatry.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
