I have experience working with persons that have been involved with various agencies such as child protective services (CPS), family court and probation.
You deserve to live the life that you want, however, this may difficult sometimes. Feelings of depression, anxiety and PTSD may be the result of past trauma, hurt and other unforeseen circumstances. Because of those experiences, the thought of seeking assistance (therapy) scary and overwhelming. I know exactly how you might be feeling, the fear of being judged, shamed or misunderstood can be frightening.

Are you not feeling quite right, and maybe not even sure why? Is it hard to be around others (partners, family, friends) and perhaps even be alone with yourself? Being misunderstood is exhausting. Working collaboratively with you, I would like to understand your personal experience and problems so that we can work toward a life that is more meaningful and less distressing.

I'm not able to take new clients at this time! My passion is relationships. I love to explore how systemic and societal power structures influence how we connect with our partners, family members, and friends. I work with couples, families, and individuals in areas such as polyamory, boundaries, personal power, queerness, gender identity, sex and sexuality, trauma, stress, life transitions, chronic illness, and anything else that affects our ability to be authentically and safely ourselves.

Along with providing therapy for individuals, couples and families, I also specialize in support within the family system and partners who are dealing with the effects of a loved ones substance abuse issues.
I provide support in finding your voice, getting yourself rooted in your own authenticity and learning how to hold on to yourself in relationships. Not having a strong sense of who you are can make you feel small but as Brené Brown says, "do not shrink, do not puff up, stand your sacred ground." Together we will explore your own strength though practices of self-discovery and personal empowerment. Whether you're in a relationship or single and looking, we'll work together so you can feel secure as your own person. Healthy and happy relationships depend on a healthy and happy you!

Whether clients are looking for support and encouragement to maximize strengths or need assistance in dealing with a wide variety of psychological issues, effective therapy begins with the formation of a relationship. I place an emphasis on meeting patients where they are, which includes taking into account environmental factors, culture, ethnicity, and family/interpersonal history. Then, collaborating together to understand goals, assets, and challenges in order to create a plan to solve problems and increase understanding. By integrating various theoretical approaches and utilizing current research from psychology and neuroscience, my goal is to provide effective individualized treatment.

My initial training as a family therapist has helped me to remember the family my client may live with now, the family in which they were raised and the neighborhood and its culture in which they grew up.
I have practiced for 36 years in Minnesota, seeing children, adults, couples and families. My practice currently is primarily with adults and couples (and teens) who are seeking a therapist who is collaborative, offers guidance and new perspectives, and believes the client is ultimately in charge of change. I value awareness, mindfulness and the process of living out a personal story that is based on strengths and hopefulness. Above all, I believe that if people feel respected and cared for they are capable of growth and moving through even the most difficult times.

I've been a psychotherapist for over 40 years. What I have found is the most powerfull tool is the relationships I develop with my clients which are often deeply meaningful, based on understanding the depth of the person, often extending to the inclusion of spiritual experience. I am a fully trained marriage and family therapist, and I have graduated from the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Institute as a certified Psychoanalyst. The American Psychoanalytic Institute has awarded me the status of a Training and Supervising Analyst, the highest level of certification awarded. I want to help people find their own sense of truth.

He is informed by family systems and the Gottman method of couples and family therapy.
Chris specializes in couples therapy and family counseling. He is skilled at identifying a couple's patterns of communicating and helping them explore alternative paths of communicating that can work better for their partner. Eventually, as each partner learns new ways of communicating, both members can feel heard and a feeling of love, warmth, and playfulness can return to the relationship.

I provide individual therapy; I do not provide couples or family therapy.
Getting help from a therapist can be a difficult step -- finding someone you can relate to, who understands, and who provides help in a straightforward, positive way is so important. I am warm, nurturing, and direct. I strongly believe in the importance of our relationship: I help you to establish goals, and we work together toward achieving these goals. I provide practical advice and assistance in handling the issues of daily life, and with addressing and healing from the struggle and pain of the past.

I have been working with individuals and families in the field of mental health for over 15 years and graduated with my most recent degree in marriage and family therapy in 2021.
Considering therapy is courageous! I provide a safe, non-judgmental, and validating space for couples, individuals, and families to gain clarity about unhelpful patterns, get support as they work through emotions that are tough to feel and even tougher to share. I hope to help clients build a solid emotional intelligence tool kit to respond more intuitively to themselves and more effectively to the people around them. I believe that in the face of life’s challenges, people are capable of change and of living their best lives. My hope is that you will be empowered to believe that, too.

Bringing Together Art and Science reflects my clinical practice with adults, adolescents and couples. It is grounded in attachment theory, developmental/complex trauma, cognitive behavioral theory, psychodynamic theory and cultural competency. My practice also integrates emerging neuroscience research about the brain and how childhood and family experiences, including trauma, affects the brain and becomes the blueprint for subsequent relationships throughout our lives. My practice also has a human and artistic element - everyone is unique and our work together reflects this.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
