I am one of the very few Maudsley-trained therapists providing Family-Based Treatment (FBT) in Michigan.
I practice evidence-based treatment rooted in science. My goals are to help clients alter negative repetitive patterns, defuse from overwhelming destructive behaviors, and create movement toward what is really important in their lives. I use acceptance and mindfulness skills, combined with behavior-change strategies, to help clients increase psychological flexibility. I believe that psychological suffering is caused by avoiding emotions and life experiences, which results in psychological rigidity, and greater suffering.

I have several years of experience in the mental health field, including four years of experience providing home-based family therapy with a specialization in infant mental health.
My goal is to create a comfortable and safe environment where you can creatively express yourself! I focus on the whole person and use a mix of techniques including mindfulness and creative expression to address a variety of issues. We will work together to set goals and create steps to achieve those goals. Adults that I sit with typically struggle with life transitions, daily stress, trauma, parenting difficulties, depression and/or anxiety related issues. In my work with children, I incorporate caregivers and/or families into sessions regularly because I believe that caregivers play a critical role in a child's development.

Hello. I work with late teens, young adults and adults as they meet the challenge of difficult emotions such as: sadness, anxiety, loneliness, frustration, anger, fear, disappointment, grief. Navigating what a full life has to offer can be complicated and at times surprising; relationship problems, school issues, parenting concerns, family conflict, multicultural issues can leave us feeling uncertain and alone. Life transitions can bring their own unique challenges: marriage/partnering, pregnancy, childbirth, medical and/or mental health diagnoses, divorce, blending family, death and dying each can challenge our usual coping skills.

It requires trust and transparency and so I hope to support you, your family, or your child on this journey in any way I can.
I primarily work with children, adolescents, and families. Many of my clients have struggled with life transitions, symptoms of anxiety, depression symptoms, and social skills. Parents are invited to come to sessions to support skills inside and outside the counseling session. Collaborating with the family supports allows for skill acquisition and client empowerment.

MYTH: If the addict "loved" family enough, they would stop "using.
My main areas of practice include: alcohol and drug addiction, relational conflict, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, trauma and PTSD. I work with a client centered, interpersonal approach to confidentially support and respond to the individual uniqueness of each client. I focus on creating open and direct dialogue using an element of humor to create relational safety. The level of ongoing anxiety and stress accompanying addiction as well as from everyday life tends to be relentless, overwhelming and at times, traumatizing. My goal is to assist clients in building insight and personalized skills to reduce distress and experience meaningful, corrective, emotional experiences.

The most important relationships in our lives sometimes feel like they are the most difficult. Clients that come to me are feeling "stuck" in their relationships with a marriage partner, or family member. They come asking how they can be better connected, feel closer and reduce conflict.

While working with children I take a playful, activity-based, and skill building approach, working on tools that will help them be healthy and successful in their school, community and family.
I believe therapy should take place in a safe, supportive, empowering, and confidential environment. Clients are active in the process, exploring areas including feelings, beliefs, and behaviors while working through personal history and identifying aspects of their lives they wish to change. Clients take a journey to better understanding of themselves and others. We will set personal goals, and work together toward desired change through reflection, processing and skill building. When working with children I work with the child individually and also invite parents/guardians into session to learn skills to utilize at home to support the child with change.

I have training and experience in Trauma-Informed Therapy, Family Therapy, Play Therapy, and working with college-aged populations, and sexual assault survivors.
As counselor, I see therapy involving a very individual, 'person centered' approach. "I believe that every person has the internal resources they need for growth & healing, and to find their direction and progress in the therapy process." I support the client on their path to success, providing empathy, acceptance for who they are and where they are, while offering a non-judgmental orientation. I encourage the client with the freedom to explore thoughts, feelings, and life experiences in our time together.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
