YOU are so much more than a diagnosis or category. The challenge we all share is how to make meaning as human beings in a chaotic world. I work with creative people, perfectionists, harsh self-critics and existential thinkers; with singles, couples & especially groups. I have expertise in helping people recognize problematic substance use, with Harm Reduction as a philosophical approach. . I enjoy working with young and early-career adults. I look forward to beginning a group for seniors, to discuss this meaningful chapter of life, and all its challenges. I enjoy learning from the people I see.

Life can be challenging, and there are moments or life chapters when we seek guidance and support. You might seek counseling to navigate a tough phase in your life or to acquire tools and strategies for managing daily symptoms. Alternatively, you may want to delve deeper into self-awareness and understanding, enabling you to be more present and break free from unhelpful patterns. At times, therapy serves as a platform to process, resolve, and come to terms with difficult or traumatic experiences, freeing you from their lingering impact on your daily life.

Psychotherapy helps people face what is difficult in their lives. Beyond providing relief and support, growth in therapy leads to increased agency and purpose, more satisfying relationships, and to greater spontaneity and flexibility. I see people with complex histories who present with anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. I am engaged, committed and practical in my approach to helping people. I continue to train in experiential dynamic therapy models, which help clients access emotions and outgrow longstanding and broken coping strategies. These models include AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), IFS (Internal Family Systems), EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples) and ISTDP (Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy).

I help my patients understand how our past experiences can keep us from moving forward in life and in our most important relationships: partners, children, other family, work, friends, finances, etc. I value collaboration in identifying what you would like to change in your life, and most importantly, fostering insight of how things have come to be so that you can feel empowered in using your strengths to make sustainable changes toward the life you want to live.

As the global pandemic has shown us, sometimes life becomes overwhelming and uncontrollable. During these times it may be best to talk with someone outside of your community of family, friends or co-workers. A warm hearted professional to lend a moment of support and guidance. I share with clients in deciding how best to approach the issues, with the intent of addressing both the current distressing symptoms and long-standing patterns of behavior that are getting in the way of a thriving life. My practice is telehealth-based, and I accept direct pay (some prefer for privacy) as well as most PPO plans as an Out of Network provider.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
