Even something your friends and family think is a minor event, can be a traumatic moment for you.
Sometimes we just need a band-aid to get us through a rough patch, and other times a deeper dive into long-standing patterns and struggles is the right focus - both are valid approaches! Choosing the right therapist is an important step, so let's chat about questions you might have and make sure you get the right fit. I work with individuals, couples, and children, and from time to time I also offer group workshops. I have specialized training in EMDR, Play Therapy, and have over a decade of clinical experience. I am currently an LPC Board-approved clinical supervisor as well as an adjunct professor in Loyola's Counseling program.

I use a Family Systems perspective to help clients identify and analyze intergenerational conflicts and patterns; set appropriate boundaries and differentiate between them and their family member; and improve communication skills.
Life’s challenges don’t always respond to our usual strategies or the advice we seek from friends and family. Some situations require shorter-term solutions while others need deeper exploration and longer-term work. That’s where counseling comes in—an opportunity to speak with a neutral third party who can listen, empathize, and introduce new perspectives and skills to help you work through the challenges with support.

Reaching out for help can be hard. Many times we take two steps forward and fall back because it is familiar, comfortable, or maybe we don’t know what step to take next. Therapy can be used to explore options and scenarios, mull over decisions, or navigate and process conflicting feelings while being in a judgment-free environment. If you are struggling with family and/or peer relationships, life transitions, stress, depression, anxiety, or grief, we can work together to reach your desired lifestyle. I also have extensive experience with those who have loved ones struggle with substance use and mental health issues.

“In a society that says, ‘Put yourself last,’ self-love and self-acceptance are revolutionary.”-Brene Brown. Perhaps you have been considering therapy for a while, maybe this is a return for new strategies, or life’s constant upheavals have necessitated you to consider our support. Individual counseling and coaching clients can expect our therapists to provide an open and non-judgmental space for honest dialogue, creative problem-solving strategies, and the use of individually tailored and structured treatment plans, of which you are an active collaborator, to meet your goals.

As a marriage and family therapist, I am trained to assist partners to navigate and overcoming adversity.
Congratulations! You have taken the first and most difficult step on your journey to a healthier you. As you begin, know that two things are certain. You are not the problem, and neither is your loved one. Your problem is the problem. I enjoy helping people navigate “problems” and overcoming them. I consider myself a mental health advocate but not in a traditional way. As a therapist, I advocate on behalf of the people in the room; even if I am advocating for you on behalf of yourself. I am here to destigmatize mental health illness and redirect the focus to mental health awareness.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
