I have been a secondary (6-12th grade) teacher since 2013, specializing in teaching Family & Consumer Science (Home Economics), while also focusing on the local English Language Learner and Special Education population.
Primarily interacting with adolescents and adults, my main focus while working with clients have encompassed challenges regarding, but not limited to, feelings of anxiety, depression, grief, and self-esteem. As clients and I explore and analyze the underlying causes of their life stressors, we work on various coping skills and strategies to move through these obstacles, allowing clients to discover and maintain health habits and lifestyle choices.

With families and adolescents I utilize a systems model that realizes the importance of all the members of the family, especially parents.
I work with clients to identify the core issues you struggle with and how you can deal with them to meet your goals. Sometimes, this has to do with dealing with other people and things around us. Other times, it is our own internal thoughts and struggles that get in the way.

Both practices, The Lighthouse and Couples Synergy provide individual, couples and family counseling in Illinois and Colorado, in person and virtually.
Couples therapy has been found to be least effective of all therapies, thus it is important for clients to seek out therapists who are versed in the latest research on couples and marital therapy. The unique couples approach I co-created with my wife, called the Couples Synergy model, has helped thousands of couples internationally for over 25 years.

As part of this work, I facilitated the weekly couples and family seminar.
In life, we face a myriad of transitions, which impact us throughout every decade of our journey. Such transitions often cause anxiety, depression and/or a sense of sadness, loneliness or loss of direction. We may wonder "who am I now" or "where do I belong". Life changes impact our relationships with romantic partners, our parents, our children and our friends. I specialize in working with people as they navigate life's transitions. I help clients to understand and make sense of what can bring greater satisfaction into their lives, with a focus on building more effective and adaptive coping skills.

Why do relationships seem so hard? Are you feeling hopeless about your situation? The good news is - you don't have to face life's difficulties alone. Everyone struggles at times, and friends and family may not be of help. You need an objective, emotionally supportive therapist to help you look at what works and what doesn't. We won't change what is already working, instead we will identify and build on your existing strengths. Then use your strengths to modify behaviors, thoughts, and emotions, that get in your way. Collaboratively, we will design a treatment plan for you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
