My therapeutic perspective considers a client's whole family dynamic and how it shaped them.
Sometimes in the midst of struggle, it is hard to be hopeful. When it is hard, it is my privilege to hold that hope for you. I work with both men and women, as well as couples. I am passionate about working with couples through affair recovery and other difficult transitions. I am trained in the Gottman method and use this approach along with techniques from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help my couples reach their relationship goals. I also have a passion for working with trauma, grief and loss; and as a first-generation American, the complexities of a multicultural existence.

I utilize Mindfulness, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and art therapy for a unique and dynamic experience.
We are capable of far more than we realize. Often, we limit ourselves through worn out narratives surrounding shameful experiences and perceived faults. What we need is perspective and ways to re-write our stories in ways that empower us to move forward with purpose. I work with teens and adults navigating depression, anxiety, stress, and challenging life transitions, amongst other issues. I support clients to build inner resources, gain self-compassion, and become empowered individuals.

I am passionate about working with clients of all sexualities, sexual practices, and backgrounds surrounding intimacy, childhood trauma, sex/ sexuality concerns, and relational discord. I believe these concerns are a result of underlying factors caused by intergenerational family systems, societal shame, challenges with coping with mental health during stressful events, lack of true understanding/ connection with self, and lack of access to helpful resources for guidance.

I specialize in working with individuals and family systems who are experiencing distress related to past trauma that is impacting functioning, disordered eating & body image concerns, attachment & relational issues, and infertility.
My goal is to instill hope, foster healing, and facilitate growth with each individual and couple that I work with. As a therapist, I have observed that we will all experience pain and suffering. I have also come to the conclusion that when we experience adverse events, we cope in whatever way protects us from feeling more pain. As your therapist, I will offer compassion and empathy as we explore the ‘why’ behind specific patterns and habits that keep you feeling stuck. We will also work towards gaining new coping skills and tools that will help you meet your specific goals.

You're newly engaged and excited about your future, but want to be proactive and invest in premarital counseling to explore expectations and prepare for the rewards and challenges of marriage. You know you don't want to repeat a family cycle of divorce, get in the practice of poor communication, or not be able to recognize the warning signs of unhealthy relationship dynamics should they appear down the road. You know now is the time to prepare and enhance your connection, celebrate your strengths as a couple and recognize your growing edges.

Do you find yourself making time for everything and everyone, but find it challenging to take the time to focus on your own compassionate care? So many of us prioritize the loving care of our family and friends while neglecting to tend to ourselves - as though we are our own most treasured other. Too often we allow our overly harsh inner voice of self-judgment to serve as our most oppressive critic, draining us of the momentum needed to manifest our fullest potential and the life we truly desire. Unleash the potential of your best self and stop settling for the comforts of habit or the stagnation of fear. You are worth it!

As a marriage and family therapist who has been married for more than 35 years myself, I understand the challenges of intimacy.
Many of the couples I see come to therapy stuck in a vicious cycle that leaves both partners feeling isolated, frustrated, and heartbroken. Their best efforts to connect with and be heard by the other inadvertently lead to more arguments and distance. When relationships don't work, we hurt. So much of our happiness and well-being as individuals depends upon the health of our intimate relationships.

Sometimes, we can get messages that we can't change ourselves or our lives, that we aren't worthy of healing, that we should not hold on to hope. I believe that during those times, it is so important to seek support. In therapy, you can find a place to explore the challenges you are facing and can receive support as we work together to come up with new strategies. I enjoy helping clients find healing, hope, and wholeness in the face of difficult experiences, particularly those related to race and culture, identity, family problems, self-esteem, and spirituality.

Hello! My name is Kishla Preston and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Georgia, Alabama and Florida. I have been practicing for the past 9 years and have loved every moment of it. I have had the heart to help others since the age of 10. So much so, that, in high school, I ended up taking custody of the 2-month-old child of a family friend until he was age 2, while his mother gained stability. That be said, I have a special place in my heart for children, young adults and mothers. My personal goal for every client I meet is to make their lives a little bit better than it was before we found one another.

The primary modalities I use with clients are EMDR, Internal Family Systems and Somatic Experiencing.
I wholeheartedly believe that because the majority of our wounds occur inside relationship, healing will come through relationship as well. In our work, I can offer you warmth and empathy as we gently explore the ‘why’ behind what you do while uncovering your strength and resilience. My work with clients focuses on grief and loss, trauma, relational discord, anxiety, depression, body image, life-transitions, adoption-related issues, parenthood and the intersection of faith and spirituality with day to day living.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
