I have an extensive background in supporting individuals and their family system as they navigate issues that fuel addiction and process addictions. I am specifically trained in Eating Disorder and Body Image treatment. I have also completed training to become a trauma specialist, as it is very rare to encounter a person struggling with addiction or an eating disorder without a history of trauma. Additionally, long history of helping family members working on issues of co-dependency and boundaries in an effort to restore healthy, loving relationships. I believe very firmly that families need to heal together!

My extensive training includes individual, couples, family, group therapies, addiction, PTSD/Trauma work, and EMDR training.
It’s my belief that therapy is a way to change your thinking change behaviors and to empower you. My goal is to help individuals ultimately achieve clarity. I want them to feel confident enough to realize that their quality of life is actually a result of their own actions and perceptions — not uncontrollable and unforeseeable events. Teletherapy is an option as well. Please note that I offer Telehealth therapy in Florida and Louisiana.

I have almost two decades of experience working with individuals and families who are struggling to overcome barriers that prevent creating higher levels of success in various areas of life. After working extensively in the field of addiction and mental health as a family coach and Master level addiction counselor I have recognized a common need under all the trauma, the grief, the anxiety and depression. Authentic connection creates the value we experience our lives. Value in a person's life is not defined by accomplishments, titles, physical belongings, or finances. Value is defined by the quality of connection in relationships.

I also have extensive experience and truly enjoy family and couples counseling.
Are you seeking or considering professional help for you or a loved one? Are you having trouble knowing where to start or how to decide on a therapist? In my professional and personal experience, connection and building a genuine relationship is the foundation to successful therapy. However, searching for the right therapist for you or for a loved one can be a confusing and frustrating process. It is difficult to get a sense of someone's personality and energy through an online profile. If you relate with these feelings, I invite you to reach out and have a free, low-stakes phone conversation/consultation.

You can’t put your finger on it, but you're sure something is wrong. You work hard to do the right things, but there is a persistent feeling of dissatisfaction. It’s as if you only exist to help others. You take on extra assignments at work even if you’re already overwhelmed. You’re always the one friends ask for favors and advice. Your family relies on you to keep everything running smoothly, and you do it all without complaining. But lately, you’ve begun to wonder what it’s all for. You want so desperately to take a moment to figure out what you want, but so many people are counting on you, and you can’t let them down.

And it is worth every second of it.” As a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) specializing in trauma, betrayal, compulsive sexual behavior and intimacy avoidance, James not only believes in sustainable emotional health and recovery—he lives it within his family, community and clinical practice. “It's not enough to just get sober,” James tells his clients. “It’s about getting WELL, choosing health over sickness, every single time. It’s about treating others—including your highest self—better than you did while living as an active addict, or 'actor.'

Maybe you can identify with some of the things I have been through which played a part in my decision to become a Clinical Therapist. Middle class & Brooklyn born, I had experienced many adverse situations in my life, which began growing up in a dysfunctional home. A dysfunctional home life is much like an Alcoholic home life, however, without the alcohol. If you experienced dysfunction growing up, it is the main ingredient that qualifies the entire family to seek therapy at some point in their life. When dysfunction causes the brain to rewire, we now have Mental Illness at play.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
