I work with many older adults who are challenged by their life's circumstances, whether it be social isolation, financial worries or health problems or other age related concerns. I believe having emotional support during this time, is very important to help us age as best we can. I enjoy working with women of all ages, ethnicities, and sexual orientations as I feel being a women is wonderful but not without some unique challenges. I truly enjoy the energy and power of women and feel honored to be a part of their growing journey. I feel the same about my work with those who have a chronic illness or chronic pain.

Through existential analysis and dream analysis, I help people find their authenticity in life. When we feel lost, it helps to slow down, turn inward, and go to a place where we can find our path again. I believe that there exists a very specific grounding and healing power within the therapy relationship. Finding a therapist who is a good fit to you is essential to finding what makes you unique and whole in your life. During the first few sessions, I help you hone in on your goals, interests, and pursuits that you wish to accomplish in your work with me. I help you find the map and the road to move forward.

This relationship is broken. The disconnection you feel is heartbreaking. Loneliness and isolation creep in as you try to navigate another horrible communication breakdown. Things were said that can’t be erased. Past conflicts stand between you like an impenetrable wall. You’re committed to this person, but this is not the relationship you want. With all the chaos and uncertainty in your life, you need to feel supported by your partner now more than ever. You take a risk and make yourself vulnerable. But your attempt to connect falls flat on its face. After not getting through – yet again – you suggest couples counseling.

Psychotherapy can offer a process to better understand the relationship between our thoughts, feelings (emotions and physiology), and behaviors. I work with people from all walks of life and specialize in treating anxiety, depression, grief/loss, trauma, career/identity issues, and adjustment difficulties related to life transitions and illness. Some of my therapeutic goals include helping clients manage symptoms of distress with healthier coping, improving relationships (with self and others), and exploring the ways in which current problems may be linked to unresolved issues from the past.

I see my work as that of a consultant to your life situation. The primary task is to understand how our emotions, & the emotions of those we love & interact with, informs the quality of our relational life. In other words, to gain greater emotional intelligence. And what does that mean? To gain a greater understanding of ourselves, & those we love, by learning about inner life and how best to express what we feel, need and want from each other. Better communication makes for better partnering, parenting & family membership.

For over 11 years I have been developing a specialization working with adults to repair phase-of-life injuries, traumas, and persistent interpersonal and occupational troubles. I bring an open mind rooted in existential philosophy; I incorporate narrative methods to assist my clients in re-narrating experiences into useful, meaningful and life transformative stories. I have a useful background teaching in secondary schools in California for 12 years prior to becoming a therapist.

I help people who are experiencing depression and anxiety, life transitions, PTSD, loss, and grief, generally, and within the context of adoption, specifically. Adoption, as I’ve learned as an adoptive parent, can be joyful, and can also come with its own unique challenges. It can help to have someone with us to help us work through problems, and make changes for the better. This is what I strive to offer my clients.

While you’re proud of your achievements, the long hours and dedication have taken a toll on you both. You want your business to have a greater impact, but you're also fearful of losing the original spirit and dream as the expansion gains momentum. I know this feels like one of the lowest moments in your life. Maybe alcohol feels like your closest ally and no one understands. Perhaps the trauma of the past keeps haunting you or the communication between you and your loved ones is not working. You are doing the right thing by reaching out and the fact that you arrived here shows that there is hope ahead. We will find you comfort without the consequences of addiction. Your loved ones will hear you and understand you. A full nights sleep without nightmares is possible. You deserve to exhale and feel peace and security. You are not alone and I would be honored to guide you.

My style of engagement is non-hierarchical and non-pathologizing, and is rooted in and guided by a spirit of loving curiosity, compassion, and camaraderie. I am candid and enjoy *keeping it real* in ways that invite the authenticity and honesty that fuel growth and change. At the same time, I work with sensitive awareness and caring of the many aspects of each individual, of each aspect’s unique needs and desires, and of the need of each to be seen, understood and supported. This approach is the foundation for the collaborative work I do with my clients.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Santa Rosa?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
