Compassionate. Sensitive. Intuitive. Bilingual-Español. My work focuses on transforming emotional pain to experience life more freely and fully. In a non-judgmental way, I work with clients to identify the core conflicts that keep appearing in new contexts. I understand symptoms as a privileged doorway to resolve these underlying conflicts. I also focus on how hidden links in the family tree influence us, and how transgenerational issues don't allow us to live "our own" lives. Secrets and unresolved family issues force themselves into our personal stories until they are resolved. We become as sick as our secrets.

When faced with a crisis, transition, or other stressful life situation we all intuitively seek comfort, support, and guidance. While we can often receive this from friends and family it often isn't sufficient to resolve the issue or prevent it from reoccurring. Real and lasting changes are possible but they require trying new approaches to old problems.

I have been a practicing psychologist since 1989 helping individuals and couples in emotional distress due to the common sources of adult unhappiness: divorce or romantic disappointment, family strife, alcohol or substance addiction, job stress, life transitions, chronic or life-threatening illness, and difficulties with aging. For couples I employ the Gottman approach to counseling, which is most useful for couples seeking to de-escalate arguments and/or recover from an affair. I also offer consulting and supervision services to psychotherapists and psychology students on a reduced fee basis.

Using a trauma-informed and evidence-based approach combining cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and family systems theory, I educate all my clients on how behaviors, thoughts, and environment contribute to problems and collaboratively explores effective coping skills to independently manage these problems going forward.
In these difficult times, it’s normal to feel inundated by our stressful environment. Maybe you’re looking for healing, or motivation to realize your full potential. My passion is helping adolescents and adults realize healthy perceptions of themselves while developing resilient habits and lasting coping strategies.

I work with people who feel that emotional neglect, dysfunctional family relationships and fear of change take away meaning in their life.
The issues on spirituality, mental health and psychology are part of my practice and interests. The frames I use are Psychodynamic and Tibetan Buddhism. How to overcome psychological conditioning and personal narratives that are too extreme and unrealistic. Many times some people find themselves in situations that aggravate their emotional pain, no way out but rather than look inside of themselves look out there, hoping that their live will change.

I want to assist you in examining why you feel like your life is not where you think or sense it should be. Why you have a nagging feeling that perhaps you're wasting time and not living your life in a more deep and fulfilling manner. You may think you're “not good enough,” or “if only this would have/not have happened," life would be different. The activities you do feel banal, going to work/school is dreadful, relationships and family are difficult, and the values and beliefs that once held you have lost their ground. You feel lonely, depressed, anxious, and perhaps substance use is worsening. You’re wondering about doing therapy.

Are you needing support in navigating through life's challenges? Whether you're experiencing anxiety or depression, or just going through a rough time I am here to help you every step of the way with compassionate and understanding care. I’m passionate about supporting you in identifying the narratives and stories that we may absorb from childhood experiences and culture (parents/caregivers, family, teachers, media, etc.), and seeing if they still align with what is truly important to you in your life today.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
