It is helpful for all of us to develop the skills that enable us to step back from emotion-laden life events (both good and bad) in order to gain perspective and insight. This allows us to interact optimally with those in our lives who can significantly impact our well-being. Therapy provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment that promotes self-exploration and the development of insight into our own behaviors as well as the behaviors of others. Identifying the potential "whys" behind our actions and reactions can be empowering in the context of personal change and development.

I consider myself a family oriented therapist, but have just as much interest in helping individuals.
What is the purpose of therapy? I believe it helps people understand what they need from themselves or their loved ones, and how to ask for it. It's often necessary for people to understand why they stopped using their voice to ask for what they need, or to find out if they ever learned how to use it. Through unconditional support, non-judgment, and caring confrontation, my intention is to help people find peace and trust in their relationships and within themselves. I have worked for several mental health agencies, and have extensive experience helping individuals, couples, and families.

We help you remain active in family and community as a function of wellbeing.
As a group, we have served in Sacramento since 2007, offering various counseling services, groups, classes, and workshops. We practice from an ecosystemic perspective, an interconnected whole. As individuals living in the wider world we must interact with each other, attending to the health of our inner life and the health of our personal and public relationships. We must learn how to balance inner and outer peace with inner and outer freedom. As an ecosystem we function as a unit of very dynamic and complex symbiotic relationships. Our health depends on ensuring balance within ourselves and balance in our communities.

Prior to seeing clients in a private practice setting, I provided therapy for over 1,000 combat Veterans, military sexual trauma Veterans and their family members for the Department of Veteran's Affairs.
One of the most important lessons I have learned as a therapist is that therapy requires more than a one size fits all approach. I treat every person as an individual. I lean on my years of experience and use a multitude of treatment modalities to treat your individual needs. We can work together to help you achieve your therapeutic goals. I have treated individuals with a variety of issues, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, panic disorders, dissociative identity disorder, substance abuse disorders, anger, and more. I have also helped families and couples achieve harmony and improve their relationships and communication.

I work with blended families to help them meet the challenges of building a new family as their worlds collide.
We all hit bumps in the road that we feel unequipped to handle. If you are reading this, you are probably experiencing one of those now. I work with my clients to help them to navigate thorough life's challenges. I do not have a handy manual to offer simplistic answers for your life. What I do offer is to listen to you without judgment, to help you identify the obstacles that keep you from moving forward, to help you find internal resources, and to work with you to help you discover the answers that work for you. I can teach you to be more compassionate with yourself since being human is to struggle.

I work with people who are experiencing issues with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationships (including domestic violence), trauma (including post-traumatic stress disorder), anger or stress. Working with a neutral third party can offer you an environment--one of safety and non-judgement--in which you may feel more at ease sharing and exploring your innermost thoughts and feelings. I see us working collaboratively on whatever issue(s) and/or goal(s)you bring in. I have been working in the counseling profession for more than 10 years. Many people come to therapy to resolve problems in relationships, manage stress related to work and family, to learn how to adapt to minor and major changes in life, or simply to enhance one’s sense of self. I believe that clients are the experts in their own lives, and that my job as a therapist is to guide clients in resolving their issues by providing a wide variety of cognitive behavioral and mindfulness tools and techniques that can easily be applied to daily life and that will alleviate suffering in a relatively short period of time.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
