I enjoy raising my 15 year old son, spending time with my partner, and adventuring with my BFF and her family.
I have been practicing as a mental health counselor for nearly 20 years, serving as a mental health counselor, counseling center director, and teaching college-level human development courses. I have also served as a domestic violence advocate and instructor within the Department of Corrections. I have expertise in not only addressing mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, relationship dynamics, parenting, and managing stress, but also helping people with college and career success, career exploration, and decision making, whether it's the beginning of your career or your next career opportunity.

In an overly connected world, we sometimes just need to be heard. Meeting with someone who listens deeply can uncover the answers that live within our hearts. The therapeutic process allows you to navigate life's transitions (identity, relationships, career, relocation, retirement, grief and loss) with grace. In time, you can bring your whole self to all of your relationships (intimate, family, friends, colleagues). You can also pursue purposeful action in your education, career, community and spiritual life. Living is the process of enduring change. Building resilience allows us to be enriched by that ongoing change process.

My areas of focus are anxiety, trauma and abuse, depression, relationships, identity formation, foster and adoptive care, men’s issues, shame and self-esteem, grief and loss, family dynamics, spirituality, and life transitions.
Welcome! My name is Dan Meier and I am a relational, psychodynamic therapist. In practice, this means I work collaboratively with my clients and pay special attention to stories, embodied messages, and relational dynamics. I work this way because I believe harm and healing both take place within the context of relationship. Counseling offers the opportunity to explore our painful stories in the presence of an attuned, compassionate professional and rediscover our hope. Together, you and I will work toward meaningful change, greater self-acceptance, and deep healing.

If you are seeking a person who would listen to your stories, I want to create a safe space and time with you.

Therapy is a process. In life, we must find a balance that works for us. Sometimes, the things that once served us well no longer work with the stage of life we are in. We learn to accept, forgive, fine-tune, and create. In therapy, we will find what works best for you and highlight the strengths that you already possess. I take the stance that I am the co-pilot working side-by-side with you to promote growth and change. You, as the driver, determine the next course of action, as well as the destination.

The human condition is a complex one. Life’s complexities can create barriers from living to our fullest potential. Many of us encounter struggles with inner anxieties, self-criticism, avoidance, or fears of failure. We judge who we are based on how we are perceived by others, neglecting what we value within ourselves. In moments, we may feel like we have to hide parts of ourselves from others or busy ourselves to divert our attention from the challenges that life continually throws at our feet.

Psychology works because it is a way to help people understand their problems and correct or change so that they can live more healthy or satisfying lives. Many people come for therapy if they are experiencing problems with depression, anxiety or relationship issues. Some other common problems that I help treat are problems with work injuries, sleep, weight, stress, trauma, and sexual problems. These problems can be greatly helped through therapy. I employ an eclectic approach to therapy, meeting each individual’s needs rather than using one form of treatment.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
