My background in family medicine as a physician assistant/family nurse practitioner (PA/FNP since 1979), offers unique perspectives to my work.
I provide an environment of safety and acceptance, where new understandings and confidence can develop and flourish. Recognizing that our feelings and previous experiences affect such issues as intimacy, the challenge of illness, coping with stress, life's transitions, loss, and sense of purpose, my approach to psychotherapy integrates concepts of treating the mind and body. I work with individuals and couples to facilitate change toward increased contentment and vitality, and have particular expertise in helping clients cope with the experience of chronic or acute medical conditions.

I look at our challenges and scars through the lens of family history, relationships, and undercurrents of our thoughts & feelings.
My ideal client is self-reflective & insightful, committed to the work of therapy. Though many of us were wounded in childhood, few of us have had the opportunity to work through the challenges life presents. Our time together will bring relief from worries, fears, work stress, low self-esteem & self-blame which greatly constrict our lives. Those I work with will want a compassionate guide for the purpose of more fully enjoying life & relationships. I work with separating & divorcing families, parents & children, where circumstances are particularly challenging, who want better things for themselves and their children.

Many people come to therapy to resolve problems in relationships, manage stress related to work and family, to learn how to adapt to minor and major changes in life, or simply to enhance one’s sense of self. I believe that clients are the experts in their own lives, and that my job as a therapist is to guide clients in resolving their issues by providing a wide variety of cognitive behavioral and mindfulness tools and techniques that can easily be applied to daily life and that will alleviate suffering in a relatively short period of time.

Life can get really stressful, whether it's work, family, relationships, or even issues within yourself. My goal is to show you not only changes within therapy but also outside of therapy. I see every client as an individual and I truly care about your progress in the work we do together. Because everyone is different, your path to healing or growth may look different than other people around you. It would be a privilege to help you find these resources in yourself and to walk with you on your pathway to wellness.

My clients have often experienced traumatic events but I have taught them about and shared tools which give them control over how those events affect them, finding peace and strength out of difficult experiences. I arrive at the intersection of compassion & collaboration as I respectfully guide my clients to explore new levels of awareness, self-empowerment, flow, & understanding. Working towards cognitive flexibility, wholeness, and healing. Using empathy & unconditional positive regard as a foundation, I may occasionally challenge you to bring forward awareness with a more direct approach. I welcome the motivation or perhaps ambivalence that comes along with seeking treatment. There is no perfection in the layers that define us, just a journey of experiences & lessons that await discovery, growth and honor.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
