Therapy is an opportunity to help people diminish pain, cope with challenges, and gain support through adverse experiences. Additionally, it challenges personal growth through insight development, compassion and attentiveness. I have 14 years of experience in a variety of therapeutic settings that have equipped me especially in areas of relational dynamics, leadership and identity development. I often work with individuals struggling to align their beliefs and values with the people around them; whether that's the family, workplace or a faith institution.

Want to support your transgender or nonbinary child? Looking for a therapist with some shared lived experiences but also plain old therapist experience? People who work with me say things like "I'm worried about a relationship", "Life totally sucks right now and I don't know what to do", "How do I navigate parenthood on top of everything else"?, "It's hard to find my community and I'm lonely", "I've becoming a 'professional gay' which comes with its own challenges" . "I am leaving or have left an abusive relationship". If you're ready for some deep exploration that honors your values, culture, and spiritual practices, let's do it!

I believe psychotherapy is a journey a client and therapist embark on together. My role is to help you move toward improved mental health and emotional functioning. We will use interactive self exploration to help you understand the obstacles that may presently be preventing you from achieving your goals. I will help you learn the skills needed to overcome these obstacles. I have effectively helped people cope with issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, parenting challenges, and life transition concerns. Suffering draws us to consider therapy, much as it sends us to any doctor. The suffering therapy focuses on is emotional and existential (a LIFE that is out of whack). If you are considering therapy it means that you take your suffering seriously and wish to seek a more fulfilling life. You know instinctively that more is possible. I have many years of experience in helping people to develop greater strength and more fulfilling relationships.

One Christmas season it had rained a lot. I attempted to circle my yard with my car to slide out of my drive way, and I got stuck. The more I tried to get out the more stuck I became. Finally, I had to do what I was dreading and call a tow truck to get me out of my own yard! Well, sometimes in life, we get stuck in our own mud, and we have to call help to get us out.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
