With 40 years of experience, I work with individuals and couples, straight and gay, African Americans, Caucasians and other racial and ethnic groups as well as other therapists helping with their unique life challenges. I also work with those having chronic illness and cancer. Challenge and loss are inevitable-- whether they be associated with love, family, health or trust or over how we hoped our life would turn out. Living well means learning a repertoire to deal with challenges so we don't remain stuck, angry or depressed.

I am sensitive to cultural, racial, religious, gender and sexual identify issues and how family and societal messages may play a strong role in your growth and development.
Developing a relationship with a compassionate, skilled therapist who can help you be present with current life stressors or past traumas, can be an important part of healing. In my practice I work with adults and adolescents with a variety of issues but specialize in issues related to sexual trauma (childhood or adult), childhood emotional/physical abuse, domestic violence, lack of parental attunement, and growing up in a home where alcohol and drugs were abused. I also work with couples who are experiencing challenges in communication, connection and how past trauma effects this. I provide clinical supervision to therapists.

Asking for help can be hard, especially if you identify as Black, immigrant, or adult child of immigrant parents. If you feel "stuck" or fear the worse thing happening, have unpleasant intrusive thoughts, or struggle forming attachments, a therapist at Melanated Womens Health LLC can help. The therapeutic relationship will help you gain awareness for life events and family of origins patterns that are influencing your approach to present day challenges. You will also develop new coping skills to feel at peace and confident in your daily life. If you want a change from traditional "talk therapy", our therapists are trained in EMDR.

It has been an honor to serve and be invited into countless lives that span across cultures and intersections of identity. I remember the vulnerability, courage and boldness it took to begin my own therapeutic journey. I know that feeling bold, courageous, and empowered might be incongruent with what is felt when starting down this path. In fact, sad, tired, frustrated, or misunderstood might be more accurate. In either scenario, I intend to partner with you, and walk this path together. My training in marriage and family therapy has supported my understanding of individuals by seeing them from a systemic lens.

Reconciled. No matter what, you can become, are deserving of and worth reconciliation. Whether with yourselves, others, your past or anything else, you can be reconciled. This is a multilayered word with multiple meanings, such as to restore, to harmonize, settle, make consistent with another, and accepting an unwelcomed thing. Personally, I think this word tells us that there is a chance, a hope, a shot at being, living and becoming healed, transformed and whole. You can become better regardless of past and/or present circumstances and/or struggles.

At times you may feel too depleted to consider making needed changes in your life, or to know what is even possible to change. Old coping mechanisms no longer work so well, bringing diminishing returns and unhappiness. It may take a crisis to be ready to seek help. Psychotherapy can reveal ways of replacing the behavior patterns and symptoms that cause us trouble with real solutions. Using the insights of existential and psychodynamic perspectives of psychology - including dream work - as a basis, I will help you understand yourself, care for yourself, and discover strength and meaning wherever you may find yourself in your life.

If you feel stuck, ruminative, or disconnected from your own life, and are seeking an engaged and examined life, psychotherapy can help. I deeply enjoy empowering my patients to know themselves and those around them with greater nuance, depth and honesty. Rather than labeling symptoms in a medicalized, detached way, I work to help patients negotiate complex relationships with themselves and those around them. By identifying patterns and the ways we find ourselves "stuck", psychotherapy can help disentangle these impasses, offering a freer way of being in the world.

We all have points in our lives when a therapist can help us move through difficult times. You may feel stuck somehow, in pain, or just wanting support. You may be holding experiences from the past that still feel present or have pain from feeling unsafe in the world. I work with clients around depression/anxiety, grief, trauma, shame, and relationship issues. I also have clients wanting to deepen healing around racial trauma and white supremacy. Many of my clients also are trans/non-binary and I welcome supporting you on your journey of coming out or transitioning or if you are just looking for an affirming healing space.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
