Anxious thoughts about family conflicts, or career, worries about the future, disappointments about a relationship have a way of robbing you of your life energy, where one feels dis-empowered and alone.
The first step you take, that moment when you pause to reflect on, “how am I doing? Why am I feeling this way?” is so very important. Life comes in the way of dreams and of loving relationships. And reflecting on where you are in this whole process often gets neglected. When things go well, one can feel that one’s choices are the right ones, but when conflicts arise, when anxiety mounts, and depression sets in, then you know something is amiss. When we first meet I will ask you questions about your concerns, your worries; together we will think about what’s getting neglected, prioritized, what you value, what you wish for yourself.

I work with individuals with a variety of socio-cultural backgrounds to address family conflict and distress, life transitions, bi/multicultural identity, interpersonal difficulties, sexual trauma, and intimate partner violence.
There are different parts of us that are hidden from others, wounded, and eager to be validated. I acknowledge, aim to understand, and work towards healing those parts. Therapy with me is relational, collaborative, and non-judgemental. The therapeutic relationship is a space where you can experience a corrective emotional experience that can help you to develop more meaningful and deeper relationships. Ultimately, I will strive to build understanding and insight into your relationships and defenses that are inhibiting them from reaching your full potential.

All kinds of things bring people into therapy. Many of my clients are struggling with some kind of relationship issue, whether it’s a stressful workplace dynamic, a conflict with a partner, friends or family, or challenges navigating the dating world. Many also feel stuck in some indescribable way – in their careers, with unhealthy habits or with feeling like they’re somehow not in the driver’s seat. I see myself as a facilitator and a guide. I’ll help you understand all the different parts of yourself, connect you to your inner voice, and learn to recognize the relationship patterns you find yourself repeating.

I am familiar with psychodynamic, CBT, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and family therapy.
We often experience our greatest pains and joys in the context of our relationships with others. In my approach to therapy, I create a safe, supportive environment to assist exploration of emerging patterns and themes. I believe in building a collaborative treatment relationship. With increased awareness, people find they have more options for improving their relationships and meeting their life goals.

For over a decade I have worked with the LGBTQ+ community, adolescents, young adults and adults regarding family & relationship issues, life transitions, career stress/burnout, self image, anxiety, depression and trauma.
For some, therapy provides a space to address an acute crisis, chronic symptoms or to expand awareness of oneself and sometimes a mix of all three. I believe therapy is most impactful when it is tailored to each person’s unique needs and concerns. This looks different for everyone and might even look different throughout your journey. Good therapy can help you to make the changes you have been struggling with, identify the patterns that might be holding you back and ultimately help you to create a more fulfilling life.

I believe every dysfunction, every disorder, and every pain was somehow born to cope with life and protect the best parts of us. In the journey towards healing, we all need a power greater than ourselves (call it God, love, or family...) to provide acceptance, support, and a safe place to unravel. Counseling is an invitation to come and be; to take an honest look at yourself for who and what you really are; to realize your issues make sense; and to have compassion for all parts of you so you can holistically heal and function at your full potential.

I also have experience working with same couples on family building.
Coming to therapy takes a lot of courage, and it also probably means you have been doing your best to address your personal issues for some time now. I work from the vantage point that growth is always possible no matter how dire or stuck you may feel. In my practice, I use an eclectic therapeutic approach that stresses reflection, support, validation, collaboration, and aims to foster the insights and behaviors needed for change.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
