I have a doctorate in clinical social work and have served as a consultant to the Family Division of the New Jersey Superior Court, focusing on the emotional needs of children and parents during the process of separation and divorce.
Nothing in life is permanent; dealing with change and loss is inevitable. I believe that how we cope with these life transitions often defines who we are and who we will become. Working with people dealing with grief and loss, as well as with people in the arts confronting creative challenges, has been the focus of my practice for over 30 years. I've also worked extensively with young people who are gifted but considered "quirky" or socially awkward, with the goal of helping them realize the value of what they have to offer others.

A unique aspect of my treatment philosophy and practice is my flexibility in working with individuals and various family groups, in order to effect positive change in a family system, for the benefit of the primary client.
My orientation to psychotherapy is to approach every session as a creative undertaking, whether it is with an individual or a group, a couple or a family, a child, an adolescent, or an adult. This is true for every stage of the treatment process, beginning with engagement and problem clarification, with developing a working relationship based on trust, and moving constructively forward in relation to established objectives. The process of each session involves engaging purposefully to facilitate problem resolution, newness, and growth. When appropriate the course of treatment can be as brief as three sessions.

It can happen in any relationship. The day-to-day grind of work, school, family and other responsibilities can cause a loss of connection. What were once minor disagreements can become a source of ever-escalating conflict. Many couples find it difficult to break the cycle and get "unstuck." I can help you improve communication, regain physical intimacy, recover from and affair, understand how past experiences affect present difficulties, manage parenting / step-family challenges, build trust, prevent a divorce and get a good start with premarital counseling.

I have more than 25 years experience as a psychotherapist in private practice. I'm fortunate to be working with very bright, successful people who may be having difficulties in family or work relationships, struggling with difficult transitions, or may be experiencing anxiety, depression or self-doubt. My therapeutic approach is to explore with you the underlying causes of your concerns and then to create new ways of responding to problems so that they don't resurface.

Ever since you experienced the death of your loved one, your life has been turned upside down. The death of a spouse/partner, family member, or friend is life-altering. You’ve had an endless range of thoughts and emotions. “What am I going to do? I’m terrified. My life feels pointless now. I’m grateful for the life we had, but I feel like I died with them.” You can still feel their presence because reminders of your loved one are everywhere. That profound loss has left you disoriented and isolated. You don’t feel connected to anything anymore. You’ve been in a fog and have started to wonder, “When will this be over?”

Are you a woman who grew up in a challenging or even unsafe family environment? Do you struggle with self-judgement, self-doubt, or self-sabotage? Do you find yourself confused in personal/professional relationships? If so, you may believe your difficulties are your own fault, and that if only you could be better or stronger, things would be easier. In truth, you may be dealing with unhealed trauma. Unsteady attachment to one or both parents can be the unrecognized source of a lot of adult suffering, Understanding its impact and learning to care for yourself instead of judging yourself is the path to freedom.

As a psychologist I work collaboratively with my clients to address their concerns (both in-person and via teleheath). I have extensive experience working from an interpersonal perspective with adolescents and adults dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, family issues, trauma, loss and adjustment to life changes (e.g. illness, divorce). I believe it is important to explore how a client's family background, culture and social environment play a role in the challenges my clients are experiencing. I view people as resilient and help clients to use their strengths and resources to make positive changes in their lives.

I integrate theory and practice principals from trauma theory, psychoanalytic theory, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and Internal Family Systems to meet the person in front of me with the approaches and tools that will be most useful.
Clients come to me for relief of symptoms of anxiety and depression, and to learn to process how trauma or complex trauma may be impacting their lives today and how to move forward from it. They also seek to gain insight into why they do what they do, to improve their agency or control over their own lives, to learn how to recognize and deal with feelings, to build their self-esteem and to find more pleasure and serenity in their lives. As we work towards the goals clients become ready and willing to make the real behavioral changes that will make a positive difference in their lives.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
