Along with a strong base of person-centered therapy, while taking into account how society, culture, and family shape us, I may use cognitive behavioral therapy, strengths-based therapy, mindfulness, DBT-informed therapy, EMDR, and aspects of other therapies, as needed.
The populations I specialize in counseling include people who identify within the broad spectrums of sexual orientation and/or gender identity & expression and their loved ones & allies, persons living with HIV, and polyamorous folks & others in non-monogamous or open relationships. I have experience working with clients with anxiety, depression, trauma, low self-esteem, & those who are going through life changes. I also enjoy teaching life & coping skills, assertive communication, boundary setting, mindfulness, & doing relationship counseling. Fellow feminists (of all genders), introverts, and/or Highly Sensitive Persons welcome!

My specialty is in difficult family and relationship dynamics (whether past or current), with a focus on how those dynamics impact the way you currently think, feel, and relate to others.
Welcome! Do you currently struggle with any of the following: anxiety; indecisiveness; tough inner critic; difficulty saying no; feeling disconnected from others; low self-esteem; a nagging feeling you’re doing something wrong or there may be something wrong with you? I have over a decade of experience in the field, focusing primarily on an approach called harm reduction. Harm Reduction is a grassroots movement that started among people who were at risk for HIV and HepC (queer people, people who use drugs, sex workers). This approach impacts the work I do with all people. It is an approach to behavioral change that emphasizes meeting you where you are without judgement while moving you towards your goals. My work is also trauma informed, works with your mind and body, relational, and informed by social justice and systems of power, privilege, and oppression.

People are often exposed to stressors and or traumatic events that at times can unravel emotions that seem to consume us. During these times it seems hard to find the light at the end of the tunnel. My passion is to help people find this light, to help heal from their past trauma and move forward. I assist my clients; school aged children and young adults in finding and changing their negative distortions and identifying their strengths in order to help achieve a peaceful, happy and whole perception of themselves.

YOU are so much more than a diagnosis or category. The challenge we all share is how to make meaning as human beings in a chaotic world. I work with creative people, perfectionists, harsh self-critics and existential thinkers; with singles, couples & especially groups. I have expertise in helping people recognize problematic substance use, with Harm Reduction as a philosophical approach. . I enjoy working with young and early-career adults. I look forward to beginning a group for seniors, to discuss this meaningful chapter of life, and all its challenges. I enjoy learning from the people I see.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
