Do you or your family member ever feel crippled by, unable to overcome, or try to avoid anxious moments in your life? Ever have unrealistic expectations that cause significant anxiety but at the same time you believe these expectations are necessary to meet your goals? Do you ever feel so bad about your body that you refuse to eat or obsessively control your eating while feeling as though you need to constantly exercise to burn off calories or even try to rid of calories in other unhealthy ways?

I work with individuals ages 11 and up with mood disorders, daily life struggles, trauma, poor self-esteem, ineffective coping skills, autism spectrum, women’s issues, communication skills, family conflict, relationship issues, building healthier boundaries, and work related stressors.
Seeking therapeutic support can be challenging, scary, and overwhelming due to fears of being judged, uncertainty of the direction to take, and who to reach out to. My goal is to create an inviting environment where you can begin the process of addressing your goals and personal struggles. I believe we all face a time where we need extra support outside of our friends and families. Where we can focus on our own personal growth and empowerment by exploring thoughts, feelings, and life experiences to increase effective coping skills, problem solving skills, and new perspectives.

We can often feel distant from others, lonely and disconnected, even when we are surrounded by people. Sometimes the hard and vulnerable parts of life feel too overwhelming and difficult to share and lean into. My approach is to listen and be with you in the stuck and hard places. My style is engaging, inquisitive, and interpersonal. I draw from what shows up in the room between us while exploring family of origin dynamics and attachment experiences in childhood and early adulthood that play out in other relationships and dynamics today.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
