The most common therapeutic approaches that I use a cognitive-behavioral as well as family systems.
My name is Claiborne Christian, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of Florida as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. my style of therapy a style that I called Grace-based therapy has a little bit of cognitive-behavioral a lot of stuff that I've learned in Sunday school, and it blends motivational interviewing and Rational emotive therapy as well. The type of clients I have worked with has varied from teens in the midst of adolescent angst to First Responders who are dealing with the trauma of the most recent issue. I like to say let's talk and let's see if we are a fit.

I work with individual clients and specialize in anxiety related concerns, identity exploration, identity-based stress and trauma, intergenerational cultural conflict, family/relationship concerns, and general life transitions.
You may feel constantly distracted from the present moment or like you’re on autopilot. Our minds often hand us thoughts that are distressing and it’s very easy to become wrapped up and stuck in them! I enjoy working with folks to disempower negative thoughts and get back to the things and people that are important to them. Together, we’ll work on developing a more compassionate and non-judgmental understanding of how your relationships, culture, and oppressive experiences have shaped your behaviors. By reclaiming your narrative, we can forge a path towards meaningful change that's rooted in your values.

My orientation is theoretically integrative - assimilating elements of psychodynamic and family systems theories into an overarching cognitive-behavioral framework.
I like to think of psychotherapy as an intersection between science and art. As a clinician, my task is to merge the art of empathic healing with the scientific rigor of empirically-supported treatment - by providing therapy that is effective, individualized, person-centered, and culturally informed. Our therapy relationship will be based on mutual respect, trust, and collaboration in pursuit of your unique goals. Together, we will work to solve problems and improve your quality of life, by implementing evidence-based treatments in a manner that is consistent with your values and sensitive to your needs, strengths, and preferences.

Life has stresses. How we cope, how we manage and how we use them to strive for the next best thing matters. Maybe you are anxious or feeling down. Maybe you and your partner are arguing more or feeling disconnected or maybe you’re beginning to feel the effects of being sandwiched between caregiving for your aging parents and taking care of your own family. It’s all hard. Finding new strategies to manage and getting new knowledge can be transformative. Together we will make a plan that helps you take meaningful action towards a more fulfilling life.

I work in a number of different modalities including: individual, couples, group and family therapy.
I have been a practicing psychotherapist in the metropolitan area for the past 25 years. I received my B.A. from the University of Virginia and MSW from Catholic University. Emotional distress, as uncomfortable as it is, represents not only an opportunity to heal, but a chance to grow. It can be a chance to discover how to be effective at reaching one's objectives and achieving fulfillment, whether it be emotional, relational, or professional. My aim is to assist in this process.

My treatments focuses on building a therapeutic alliance between counselor and individuals. I support individuals as they identify their goals for treatment and take steps towards reaching those goals. Along with using evidence-based practices, I feel the family unit plays a big role in Mental Health and it is importance to build healthy family relationships. Much of my work has been focused on working with youth and helping them process trauma through the use of Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (TF-CBT).

I use the Internal Family Systems framework for individual and couples telehealth psychotherapy.
Hello You! Welcome to this brief introduction about me and the modality I use. My hope in working with you, is to help you liberate extreme emotions, restore trust in yourself to live in balance, harmony, and wholeness. So many of us are living in overwhelm, anxiety, depression, and relationship conflicts; it is time to become emotionally whole and connected to others. This is an inside job, and it is worth it to be reflective, to see why you do the things you do and feel the emotions you do. The work is hard and ultimately worth, you are worthy of this journey to a fuller connection to your true self and those you love.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
