I have joined with many individuals with a diverse range of ages, cultures, and symptoms including sexual trauma, family conflict, attachment issues, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, poor self-esteem, anxiety, and anger.
Through the therapeutic relationship, I provide a safe and inviting place to be vulnerable, to process life adjustments, and to begin learning healthy coping skills. I have 10 years of experience engaging in counseling relationships with children, adolescents, and adults in the Chattanooga area. I believe that change begins in the context of an authentic relationship and that every unique story deserves to be heard. Drawing from family systems, interpersonal, and cognitive-behavioral approaches, I provide evidence-based therapy for both individuals and families.

We all bear wounds of some kind. Everyone has a unique life story to share. I became a therapist to listen to others’ stories of pain, and work with them to find light in their darkness. For 15 years, I have worked with individuals and families that have suffered from wounds inflicted by others, as well as emotional harm that may be self inflicted. Trauma and dysfunctional family patterns, or damaging thoughts- such as shame, anxiety, and self-defeat- may serve as examples of these wounds. The weight of unresolved emotional and mental pain can be both limiting and exhausting. But there is hope, and these wounds can be mended.

I offer a plan of action and a variety of tools for most anyone suffering from the family disease of addiction.
I began counseling in New York when I was working as a chaplain during graduate school. I began in community centers, hospitals and prisons. During that time I discovered I have a genuine connection and desire to work with people suffering from the disease of addiction. When I returned to Nashville (the city of my birth), I began teaching middle school and high school, primarily with underserved populations. There I found that same connection with hard to reach youth, adolescents and their families. It is my sincere goal to help individuals, couples and families find a path to mental and emotional health and serenity.

Do you have the "perfect life" but it feels like something is missing? Do you struggle with relating to other people and making friends? Is it difficult for you to set boundaries at work and say no to others? On the outside, people might envy you for your hard work and dedication. What they don't see is the overwhelming pressure that you put on yourself to succeed. You might also struggle with feeling confident in your decisions, have a strained relationship with your family and friends, and find that your life lacks fulfillment. If this resonates with you, I'm interested in helping you find more satisfaction and peace in your life.

Reaching out is a tough but crucial first step. Pushing past the fear or even gaining the energy to start the journey out of a hard and often dark place is so difficult. So, I applaud you for being here and preparing to take that step. It would be my honor if you would allow me to be a guiding light as you navigate and work through these tough times. Whether it be an internal struggle with yourself or what feels like a rigorous war with your spouse, your family, or your friends. Together we can find hope for a brighter day. Together we will work hard to turn that hope into a reality and we will do it one step at a time.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community in today's world, you’re constantly wondering whether you are in a safe place to be your authentic self. Perhaps you've been hurt by your parents, the Church, and people who were supposed to love you unconditionally, simply because of your sexuality or pronouns. You don’t want to lose these relationships, but you also know that something needs to change. Whether you're exploring your sexuality or gender identity for the first time, or came out a long time ago but are struggling due to unsupportive family, friends, or your own self-doubts, there IS a path forward to live freely and happily.

Feel free to reach out to see if I am a good fit for your family.
When children experience big emotions, they usually do not know how to talk about them. Play is how children learn and communicate. Children teach us so much about their inner world if we just watch them play. I am passionate about helping kids have a better understanding of their emotions and how to regulate them. It is also important for caregivers to feel supported and to learn tools that can help them and their child have a positive relationship.

I enjoy working with ages 16+ in individual and family settings, as well as with couples, parents, and groups.
Navigating through life’s challenges can be hard, especially when you feel you are doing it alone. The journey toward healing and the ability to thrive starts with being heard. Being able to talk about them in an open, non-judgmental, compassionate, and safe environment, and having an empathetic ear listen to your story can help you begin your healing process. I am passionate about helping you find your way, the way that is right for you and is unique to your specific circumstances, perspectives, and goals.

I enjoy working with individuals and couples regarding relational, life, mood, family-related, codependency, and other issues.
Making the step to begin the counseling process can be scary and overwhelming; but it can be the first step toward healing and change. I absolutely love working with individuals and couples. Walking along side clients as they journey their way through hurt, anger, grief, frustration, and other emotions, is my pleasure. Some of my previous clients came to me when things seemed to be very grim and hopeless. It has been my pleasure to watch them put in the hard work and commitment to the therapeutic process and come out as stronger individuals and couples.

Who are you? No really who are you underneath it all? Underneath the shame, the anxiety, the people-pleasing, the depression, and the long-lasting trauma? Your patterns tell a story, the way you carry yourself tells a story, the way you interact with others tell a story, and most importantly, the way you interact with yourself tells a story. Every intricate detail of your life tells a major story. Since childhood we have been embedded with ideas of who and what we are. By the time we reach adulthood we become a melting pot of ideas from society, family and social media. What do you have to say about you?

I started Aptitude Behavioral Services, LLC to service school-age children in the East TN area. I love working with children through pre-teen ages and have also worked with a few higher-functioning teenagers. My typical day involves working with families that face challenges with behavior and working directly with children to decrease these behaviors while building skill deficits. I enjoy including family in my sessions and want to empower caregivers and family members so that they are equipped to handle behavioral challenges.

I offer individual and family sessions where evidenced-based approaches like CBT and CPT are used to explore impactful or traumatic life events, outline desired goals, identify personal strengths used to meet goals and process helpful tools and techniques to change unhelpful patterns that keep humans feeling stuck.
My primary goal in working with clients is to build a trusting and transparent relationship where together we can explore the relationship they have with self, important people in their lives, and the unique environments they navigate. This means my approach is insight-driven and built on the belief that self-knowledge is an empowering tool needed to create a deeper understanding of patterns, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. In my experience, this process creates space for the brain to consciously make the desired changes.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
