If you struggle within your relationships, whether they be romantic or familial/social, I can assist you and your partner/family member in the development of skills to foster growth and closeness within your relationship.
You can call me Cathy. Are you stuck in your head, overthinking, and/or experiencing physical symptoms of depression, anxiety or trauma? As we go through the experience of life, we learn things about our environment and how to function within that environment. We are always learning and sometimes our brain solidifies messages that are harmful to our mental health, I want to help you restructure those messages so that they are more accurate or helpful. Additionally, I will assist you in the development of skills to manage strong emotions and finally assist you to form solutions to your problems.

The goal is to devise a customized treatment plan that will weaken or eliminate the patterns, cycles, and habits that keep the individual/family from living a more successful, productive, and emotionally fulfilling life. Dr. Kevin Wickes has written numerous articles for professional journals, and has presented at national conferences.

I work with people aged 16 and older in individual and family sessions to achieve their goals and discover some peace.
You have described yourself as a "people pleaser". Sometimes that feels like a good thing, but other times, it's overwhelming. Anxious thoughts are making it hard to set boundaries and prioritize yourself. Fear leaves you paralyzed when you need to make a decision. Trauma history leaves you struggling to say no and advocate for your needs. Guilt feels like it controls your life and relationships.

I work with individuals, couples/co-parents, and families. I see children in play therapy from three years old and up as well as adolescents. I work with many families going through the difficult family transition of separation/divorce/remarriage/grief. I enjoy working with couples and utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to remind couples to acknowledge, appreciate and respect their differences. I found the MBTI to be especially beneficial to couples considering marriage or long-term commitments.

Sometimes, a family or systems approach, where a family member(s) is included, allows for healing that is often more difficult when navigating an issue alone.
Lonely, anxious, depressed, frustrated, angry, confused? Psychotherapy can be an important step toward seeking change, resolving issues and focusing on personal growth. Each person who begins therapy has different needs and goals making the therapeutic relationship unique. Life brings challenges, obstacles and burdens that can cause many feelings and emotions; sometimes paralyzing us towards a direction. Therapy is not a mystery but rather a process where healing is facilitated in a caring environment.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
