I appreciate the complexity of identity and its intersections with gender, sexuality, race, class, culture, ability, immigration, religion, and family.
"I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood." - Audre Lorde. As people, we have a deep need to be understood, and one of the most profound ways to do this is in a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship. As a therapist, I work with individuals & couples using a psychodynamic approach. My role is to help you identify your needs and put your inner experience at the center, engaging both mind and body, so that barriers to your well-being can be lifted.

I have worked extensively with individuals and couples experiencing rupture and repair from infidelity, relationship changes including separation and divorce, and changes to the family unit, such as the birth of a child or illness of a family member.
Sometimes life’s hard moments don’t pass as quickly as we wish. This can be especially felt in the context of relationships with those whom we care deeply for: the connection may begin to feel stale; communication breaks down; one person’s growth doesn’t always align with another and relational dynamics may change.

I completed a 4-year post-graduate certification in Marriage and Family Therapy, and am constantly improving my skills.
Are relationships a source of stress in your life? Whether it’s your partner, single status, family, friends, or co-workers, your interactions take up mental space and cause anxiety. On the outside, you're fine. On the inside, you’re comparing and worrying what other people think and feel, trying to keep them happy, or playing defense. You just want to feel grounded, accepted, and comfortable in your own skin and for people to know and value you for who you are. I believe you get to live your life in close connection with others, while confidently pursuing your own goals and dreams.

I work with adults and couples with multiple and varied issues, including chemical dependency, mood disorders, relationship and family problems, and psychotic disorders.
We are defined by our relationships. Relationship to ourselves, to others and to the world. Relationship dynamics get formed in attempts to succeed in life. Though sometimes we may succeed in relationship at certain points in life, those same dynamics can also become unproductive. At that point we can use the dynamic to understand the problem and determine the adjustments that then lead to success once again.

I specialize in couples, family, depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, relationships, couples counseling, sex therapy, ketamine assisted psychotherapy, and career coaching.
John P. Carnesecchi, LCSW, CEAP is a seasoned clinician that treats people of all ages. A client is usually struggling but feels connected enough with me as their therapist to speak openly and freely about their experience. They can accept feedback with an understanding that we are both on the same team. When we touch on something out of their comfort zone, I hope they recognize they are safe and can stay engaged in the process. Together, we push past the barriers preventing them from feeling better, and they gain a better understanding of themselves to meet their potential.

If you are struggling with issues related to self-worth, intimacy, vulnerability, social interactions, family, romantic relationships, and life transitions, I am here to help.
I am a University of Pennsylvania trained, millennial, Indian-American, psychotherapist who utilizes emotion-focused methods to help you generate a stronger sense of self. My main goals in therapy are to help you feel less alone with your emotions and to help you feel more understood in your experience as a POC in the United States. As a child of immigrants, I can relate to the unique challenge of straddling two very different cultures and trying to fit in with both. Oftentimes, I will draw from my personal experience of navigating similar cultural, generational, and racial clashes to better support you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
