I incorporate elements of DBT, AEDP and family systems therapies, as well as mindfulness and attention to the mind-body connection.
Perhaps, the secret to navigating life is understanding, and accepting, that life is inherently difficult. Even so, navigating those difficulties is not always so simple. As a socially conscious and strength-based clinician, I believe therapy is best approached collaboratively, looking at personal experience within cultural context. We each hold strength and wisdom to find our way through difficult and even traumatic experiences, especially with the healing power of relationship as support. Therapy can be a wonderful place to work towards deeper self understanding that translates into greater fulfillment within our lives.

In a sense, all therapy -- even individual therapy -- is family therapy. We carry the voices, the gazes, the expectations, the approvals and disapprovals, the deep connections to those we first knew within us throughout our lives. Therapy can help to uncover and clarify these links and engender a better understanding of our own motivations, leaving us freer to make effective decisions in our daily lives. I view therapy as a collaborative process between therapist and patient, and I believe much of the work is accomplished through that relationship itself.

I take an action-oriented approach helping you to gain insight, learn new coping skills, meet your goals, and leave each session with strategies to take into your week. There are many ways to process experiences and feelings, not simply limited to talking. Integrating psychotherapy and creative expression can provide a refreshing, insightful, and effective experience in therapy. Some of my areas of focus include trauma, anxiety and depression, stress, loss and life transitions, as well as family and relationship difficulties, among others.

I know this from my own experience writing about an estranged family member.
As a Narrative Life Coach, I want to help clients unlock the themes and patterns of their lives by asking probing questions and helping them work towards their next chapters. I offer weekly optional writing exercises and readings to support this journey. Narrative Coaching works well with anyone going through a painful loss or rejection, such as a death, break-up or divorce, as well as anyone who desires change but feels stuck or struggling. I'd like to help clients to realize their potentials by exploring possibilities, expanding their thinking and re-writing their narrative.

As a couples and family therapist, I coach clients to speak from their softer emotions and listen to one another with empathy and understanding, without getting defensive.
Whether working with couples, adolescents, families, or adult individuals, I see the therapy room as a place for clients to discuss the parts of themselves and their lives that they can’t talk about anywhere else. My approach is open, playful, and collaborative. I use a combination of IFS, narrative therapy, and psychodynamic techniques to help clients consider the stories they tell about themselves that may need to be rewritten.

I have a strong background in helping clients to successfully work through family of origin issues, depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, addictive behaviors and career struggles.
Because people are not defined by a diagnosis or demographic, I don't specialize-I individualize. I have extensive experience helping clients identify personal and professional goals while helping them focus on maintaining present commitments and expectations. Within a structured conversation, it is possible to address barriers-situational and emotional-and effectively develop a realistic plan for creating desired changes. I enjoy combining insight oriented psycho-dynamic therapy with the goal setting aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy.

The difficult thoughts and feelings that we hold deep within ourselves can negatively impact our mood, success, health, and overall happiness. In therapy, it takes bravery to unearth, examine, and learn from our life experiences in the therapeutic process. I help clients with many types of difficulties including anxiety, depression, work stress, culture and identity issues, adult ADHD, trauma, and social/relational problems with partners, friends, and family. Further, I have experience working with young and older adults, college students, high-level professionals, and executives.

I have extensive experience working with young adults striving to live intentional lives full of purpose and meaning in a chaotic world they did not make. My clients experience low self-esteem, cross-generational conflict, anxiety about the future, and sadness about the past. We explore experiences regarding family, feeling loved in intimate relationships, communicating effectively, and questioning spirituality. The clients I work with want to be seen for who they are while feeling comfortable in their skin.

As a Mental Health Counselor with extensive experience in couples/marital therapy, I am skilled at addressing communication difficulties, loss of connection, infidelity & abuse. In individual therapy I specialize in treating relationship concerns, interpersonal struggles, family conflict, trauma, anxiety/depression, & self-esteem issues. My therapeutic style is flexible and intuitive, but I firmly believe that the strongest indicator of successful psychotherapy is the connection between counselor and patient, so my goal is to develop true, meaningful rapport with all of my clients (with a healthy dose of humor mixed in!).

"I need help." As human beings, we all will say this phrase at some point in our lives. Acknowledging a need for help can be uncomfortable, painful or scary. Perhaps you've discovered that something is keeping you from being your best self. Or maybe your relationships, career, or family life is leaving you feeling depleted. Fortunately these struggles do not have to define who you are; change is possible and it can be a beautiful thing. Recognizing and building upon the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity and challenges has become a refined skill and passion of mine.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
