Life can be difficult and so can college. Talking about it is a great way to help make things go smoother. I’m here to help you talk and connect in a way that makes it easy to do so. We can discuss anything you want from the past, present or future and find ways together to better understand the challenges that you face today. I am here to let you know that you can tell me anything and you are not alone. Creating a safe space to have good conversations about your life is what I do best. Sometimes it's hard to talk about things that give us anxiety or depression but the best medicine is talking.

."I belong, therefore I am." The sense of belonging has often been wounded, damaged or undeveloped. Initially in our family, later in school, with friends and at work. Through the process of exploration and self-searching, we can begin to let ourselves go. When we are kind, and less consumed by our own ego; the darkness of depression and anxiety have less of a hold and we can find freedom.

You're slamming the alarm clock; it was another night of broken sleep. You're feeling drained and wishing for a moment of peace and happiness. You are constantly giving to others when you're running low and rarely have time for yourself. You feel pressures and stress piling up and weighing on your shoulders. You want to reach out for help but are scared of being vulnerable and driving people away. At night when you lay down to sleep, the thoughts are racing and the worries return. All that you want is understanding, support, and acceptance.

I have helped many AAPI clients deepen their self-understanding and achieve self-compassion and healing through exploration of their family dynamic, cultural values and identities, as well as to process their complex trauma using EMDR and/or talk therapy.
My name is May, a bilingual (English and Mandarin) therapist with 6+ years of experience who was born and raised in Shanghai. I came to the U.S. as a teen, and now I live in NYC. I have been a therapist for the past six years working with a variety of populations with different needs and struggles in life. I have interned at a public high school and then a community mental health center in Philadelphia. Previously, I worked at a nonprofit in Brooklyn, serving mostly Asian and Latino immigrant families by providing individual, couple, and family trauma-informed therapy for the past four years.

I specialize in helping you process through emotions and develop healthy coping skills to promote growth. I take pride in helping individuals like yourself, figure out who you are by helping you cope with feelings of anxiety, depression, and self esteem. As a South Asian American, stigma and judgment from family and friends can stop people from seeking counseling. This is why it is important for people of color to feel comfortable reaching out for support. I have a passion for working with women, most specifically women of color, to help process through feelings.

I primarily specialize working with patients using CBT, DBT, internal family system, ACT, inner child therapy, and solution-focused therapy.
I have experience working with a wide range of patients from young children to older adults. I approach therapy from a patient-focused and strengths-based lens, believing that each individual has the capacity to overcome life's challenges when it comes to all areas of work, relationships, and family. Additionally, growing up in a Chinese (Fujianese) immigrant family in America, I understand the impact of generational trauma and cultural identity struggles that first generational individuals and people of color may deal with. I work with patients and within the community to mend and grow from these experiences.

These days, we are busy and stressed. It seems that the tasks never end, and the work never stops. Everyday seems to have something new that can potentially bring down a delicate balance that we have worked so hard to achieve. We hear about self-care and work/life balance, but we struggle to do these things. You want to do it all but there never seems to be enough time. Sometimes work, school, family, friends, or anything else makes it difficult for you to have some time to process and think.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
