I have been a therapist in private practice for 20+ years. As a therapist I utilize a range of modalities and fit the modality to the needs of the individual rather than the individual to the modality. I have worked as a consultant to a special program for individuals who have a history of sexual assault and violence as well as family violence and, in addition, have taught for 15 + years at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. I have worked successfully with relationship difficulties, employment difficulties as well as with those with a history of PTSD, mood disorders and marital conflict.

I was trained as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, and have since integrated cognitive behavioral methods into my work. I have had extensive experience working with people of varied cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds. I work with all age groups except children, as well as with all sexual orientations. I work with individuals, couples and families. My core belief is that when therapy works, regardless of the presenting issue, it does so because of the relationship that has evolved between me and those that come to me for help.

At times we find ourselves unhappy and stuck in unproductive and often painful patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving and relating. Through a collaborative, interactive therapeutic relationship I help people achieve greater self-understanding and self-awareness so they can change and grow, and find a way forward into happier and healthier ways of being.

I believe that my greatest strength is helping people to empower themselves and to engage life in a meaningful way. I work with individuals, couples and families in a predominantly cognitive/ solution-oriented way. I am very present in our work and deeply believe the relationship with the client is paramount. We focus on strengths and assets, the positive, infused with a large dose of humor and humanism. Together we examine attitudes and beliefs and what works and what doesn't. At its best psychotherapy is a creative collaboration between the client and therapist about the client's issues.

Finding the right therapist can be very confusing and overwhelming! On your initial visit, I will spend a generous amount of time with you on your presenting concerns and your goals for therapy. Having 20 years of experience, I can assess the therapy method most likely to be effective for your specific situation. My specialty is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and I find most clients achieve significant progress with this method. However, if I feel CBT is not appropriate for you, I have a number of experienced colleagues in my practice with different methods I can recommend (behaviorhealthny.com).

It is important to have physical and mental well-being.Therapy is a process of self discovery and healing. I believe in the process and help people understand that we do it together. It takes time to work on one's issues but I believe in the process of growth and positive change. I help people recognize that you have to love oneself , feel you deserve to be happier and do the work to make that happen.I believe that people are survivors and can overcome obstacles. I look up insurance benefits for patients and do all billing to lessen patient worry over this. I provide telehealth therapy for those who work from home or are disabled

Each of us has a unique personal history defining who we are, and how we function in the world in positive and problematic ways. By understanding formative influences we can free ourselves from patterns of thinking and behavior holding us back. I work with individuals and couples to help identify past experiences, and feelings, emotions, and patterns of behavior in present life and relationships that stand in the way of a deepening sense of identity. I bring an eclectic background to my work with patients, informed by a long history of engagement in the arts, and a thirty year career in the mental health field.

I use a tailored approach with each client, drawing on cognitive-behavioral techniques, concepts of family and interpersonal therapies, object relations, and psychodynamic formulations.
The personal interaction of therapy is a powerful way to identify patterns of behavior and coping styles, and then take steps toward chosen areas for change. To pursue personal growth, our work recognizes the inter-relatedness of physical and emotional health. My work is based on diverse experiences with men and women, from teenagers to seniors, who face challenges including interpersonal problems, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress, obsessions/compulsions, and death/bereavement. I previously worked in corporate finance, where I gained an understanding of the business world that often helps in our work.

You can come as an individual, with your partner, or your family to work on relationship, mood or anxiety issues.
If you feel lost, confused or hopeless about your life or your relationships, you can turn things around. You can get clear about these problems, and find solutions. You can have a life that more authentically fits who you really are. You can manage your relationships so they begin to feel warm and fun again. When you're suffering and feeling awful, it may be hard to believe that there are things you can do to feel good again. It may also be hard to believe that you can find the power to shift and revive painful relationships.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
