This can also enhance your work if you care for people, in your work or family.
Let's work together to make your life better. My team at Umoja Behavioral Health and I work well with addictions, teens, sexual abuse, marriage/relationship problems and LGBTQ issues. We also work with those who are experiencing anxiety or fears about success, wish to improve coping and relationship skills, and to experience greater fulfillment in life. Culture, worldview, and knowledge of self represent the solution to problems as individuals--and as a society. I envision a world where everyone is authentic, engaged, and makes empowered choices rooted in passionate purpose.

Whether you are seeking treatment for yourself, your relationship, your family or someone else, I am here and I can help.
I help people recover from trauma. I know what it's like to wake up every day feeling disconnected and afraid. I know the depression, anxiety, and confusion that accompany surviving a traumatic experience. I know that it takes time to understand what you've been through; that it was real, it wasn't imagined, and that any damage done was not of your own making. I also know that healing is possible. It is possible for you to feel confident and safe in your own body. To trust yourself, and have faith in your choices. To know that you are not your past, you are already whole and complete, and YOU are the expert on your own life.

I utilize a Person-Centered, Trauma Focused, Cognitive-Behavioral approach and where appropriate I utilize elements of mindfulness, family interventions, and even personal interests.
As a therapist my driving passions are to help people overcome trauma, de-stigmatize mental health, and advocate for counseling, not just as a means of addressing mental illness but as a tool for self-exploration, healing, and growth. I know that therapy, or any commitment to change for that matter, can be scary and uncomfortable at times but I provide a calming space and an empathetic and unconditionally caring partner in your journey of self-discovery, healing, and growth. I truly believe that counseling can be a means to a better, more satisfying and comfortable life for everyone.

For example, what happens when a child grows up in an environment where family members argue? What if the child hears messages that negate their self worth? Research indicates children internalize patterns of communicating and relating, and these patterns self replicate.
Have you ever noticed a circular pattern that goes like this: You begin to talk negatively about yourself, and your body, like an unwilling accomplice, is brought along for the ride? Do you catch yourself saying, "I'm not rich enough or smart enough. I don't look a certain way, have the right home, clothes, friends, etc." What kind of impact might this have on the body? Can such thoughts give rise to feelings of depression and/or anxiety? Traumatic events can lead to negative beliefs about self. Media can also contribute to the way in which the individual thinks and talks about the self, especially in relation to others.

Raising a family today is hard work! Breakups, parent conflicts, personal, and family issues can be overwhelming.
Over 27 years I've had the privilege of helping children, teens, parents, co-parents, adults, and families; facing tough and painful circumstances. Family, Children's, Delinquency, and Criminal cases continues to lend support for those involved in legal matters. Parents are powerful influencers good & bad. I work to improve, empower and educate for more functional relationships. Children and teens often need an objective ear to help them with increasing pressures. Adults seeking support and problem-solving tools for relationships, career, and childhood-effects are also valued focus. This includes the effects of trauma and abuse.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I obtained my B.A. in psychology from Southern Illinois University. My interest in male/female relationships led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Liberty University. But I don’t only work with families. Families are comprised of two individuals who were reared in his/her family of origin from which they developed their worldview and values. Two unique individuals come together, bringing their experiences with them into the relationship. These differences can result in conflict. My job is to help them see how the conflict arose and constructive ways to resolve

Your family is deserving of repair and becoming bonded and whole.
Are you looking to go beyond the surface and deep dive to discover the root of your suffering and struggles that you are facing? Are you needing to integrate pieces of your life story and make sense of something that has left you disjointed, disillusioned or trapped? Perhaps you are ready or feeling a need to create space to unfold some of the painful material that keeps you in perpetuating cycles or patterns that have been difficult to manage and break.

If you feel that you, a loved one, or your family would benefit from therapy and would like to enter a space that is safe for you to unpack the underlying things that are causing pain while learning new skills that lead to personal growth, please contact us and we can schedule a meeting.
Individuals feel disconnected from their loved ones, their work and, most importantly, themselves when they experience trauma or abnormally high amounts of stress. They become anxious easily, they can be irritable, and they can relive traumatic events that can lead to life feeling completely unmanageable. Additionally, couples and families become 'stuck' when trauma, conflict, and other negative dynamics get in the way of vulnerability, communication, and the love that we crave from those close to us. Those caught in these painful patterns need support and the therapeutic process can be transformative.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
