Adler’s definition of empathy to see with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another is the philosophical mantra defining my sensitivity to other people's feelings, emotions, and desires. My genuine empathetic relationship with clients and mutual trust are the essential conditions to make therapy successful. I pride myself on being a compassionate listener to individuals who have faced life’s most profound challenges, suffered from mood disorders, experienced trauma, grief, abuse, or relational problems, and suffered multiple stresses, including those related to work and academia.

I've been helping my clients to build awareness, compassion, understanding, respect, empathy and acceptance toward themselves and others for 20 years. As an “introduction” to who I am, what I believe in, and what I “bring to the table” during our therapy sessions, please allow me to use a quote from one of my favorite books written by David Klow, LMFT, “You Are Not Crazy”. His words are exactly what I want you, my Client, to hear from me and for you to believe. You are not crazy. Really, you are not. Others are experiencing nearly the same things as you, yet they just don’t talk about it. They often don’t even have the words to describe what they are experiencing; but if they could, you may find that it is a lot like what you are going through.

Our responses to life experiences can certainly leave us feeling choiceless, out of control, and stuck. There can be a sense of feeling lost and unsure of how to move forward. You continue moving through it, and you may even feel you’ve been functioning but not really living…This would feel incredibly unsettling to anyone. As a member of the military for over 20 years, I understand that feeling, and the impacts of minor and major life changes. These changes shift our world view, our relationships, and how we see ourselves. You may have tried multiple ways of coping, but traditional approaches haven't produced the change you want.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
