In addition to providing therapy, I have been a clinical supervisor/teacher at The Family Institute at Northwestern University since 1995, training graduate students and post graduates in couple and family therapy.
Are you struggling in your relationship right now? Do you feel distant from your spouse or partner? Are you fighting a lot? Do you find yourself crying all the time and feeling bad about yourself? You are not alone. These are the kinds of concerns I often hear in both individual and couple therapy. Each of you, however is unique and needs solutions that are specific to your situation. I have 30 years of clinical experience in providing psychotherapy to adults, adolescents, and children, the last 25 of which have followed advanced training in couple and family therapy.

I focus on the patient's relationships with parents, siblings and other significant family members.
As a therapist for over twenty-five years, I've learned that people are often unaware of how their current issues are connected to experiences and feelings encountered earlier in their lives. I work with patients to help them identify and explore repeating patterns in their lives and how these patterns can be evaluated and changed to improve personal and professional outcomes. My patients have found that therapy is a valuable experience and together we make the process productive and fulfilling.

How we make sense of our life experiences and deal with life's challenges is important for all of us. Adoption adds a layer of complexity. Issues of attachment, trauma, loss, race/identity, behavioral regulation, self-esteem and the impact of difficult/unknown early history take on added significance as children grow and mature into young adults. At The Cradle Center for Lifelong Support, I work with all members of the adoption circle My expertise is in strengthening children and their families by improving attachment, communication and understanding through individual/family therapy, parent coaching and education.

All of us -- women and men, young and old, poor, middle class and upscale folks, minorities and majorities -- have to deal with complexity. As a therapist I help heal hurts from the past, assist clients in managing present challenges, and work collaboratively to create more satisfying future lives. The people who see me for individual, couples and family therapy represent a culturally diverse group. Their difficulties range from anxiety and depression, to stress disorders, OCD/OCPD, relationship problems, employment issues, and bereavement. Many of these women and men report quick progress in better managing their personal, family, academic, and work lives.

Everyone is welcome: all backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, family situations.
People often search for a therapist when they feel like they've tried everything and it's just not working well enough. It can be hard to see a situation clearly when you've been immersed in it for so long. I help people to take a step back, so they can see things more objectively. Through psychotherapy, people can find internal strength and resources they didn't know were there. They can then start to see new perspectives, both of themselves and their situations, and can begin to make changes.

When we are connected to others, the world feels safer to live in. Healthy and happy relationships can bring joy and meaning to our lives. But that's not always an easy path. I work with individuals and couples who are struggling in their marriages, partnerships, and overall family dynamics. Often their goal is to bring a sense of vitality and intimate connection to their relationship. That can mean working through codependency issues as they learn how to build healthy boundaries and connection. That can mean learning how to create self awareness and taking greater responsibility for your own healing.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
