My additional specialities include OCD, youth & family therapy, chronic illness, & supervision.
Are you tired of obsessing over food and weight? There are so many messages that make us feel like we need to control our body size, above all else. Trying to figure out how to be healthy and take care of yourself can feel like an exhausting, uphill battle. It's not your fault and you don’t have to go through it alone. Wherever you are in your treatment process - if you have an eating disorder or are concerned about your body, your weight or food - I can consult to help you decide your next step. Therapy isn't just for those with a diagnosable eating disorder. If your relationship with your food is distressing, you may need support.

During these trying times, I understand how anxiety, depression, relationship woes, physical and mental health challenges, and family strife can increase as if it's under a microscope! Individuals want and need internal working systems that help them do more than cope and survive, they need the strength and awareness to grow from trials and tribulations both within and outside of one's control.

Often in times of stress, we don’t even realize how much emotional energy we are using just to get through the day. Whether you’re finding yourself feeling overwhelmed, stressed, in pain, alone, facing difficulties with family members, or experiencing recurring issues in close relationships, being able to talk about it can bring relief and even be life changing. Having a safe, nonjudgmental therapeutic space to address difficult, painful, or overwhelming feelings or problems can equip you to manage the adverse periods that life brings, feel better, and experience more satisfaction in your relationships and within yourself.

As psychological distress is often a function of relationship difficulties, psychotherapy often focuses on thoughts & feelings about the significant people in one's life, who may include family members, romantic partners, friends, and co-workers.
Most people who work with me begin when painful experiences of anxiety and depression interfere with their ability to find enjoyment and satisfaction in relationships and professionally. Psychotherapy with me usually begins with a discussion of the concerns, problems, and distress from which you are suffering and for which you seek relief. The goal of this work is to solve the problems, alleviate the distress, and place the concerns in the context of your personal development. Results of this effort often include increased self-awareness, enhanced self-esteem, recognition of unique strengths and potentials, and more positive feelings.

I specialize in helping people sense into what is beneath the surface to better understand what is driving the problems they haven’t been able to solve. Perhaps you've been unable to make progress on a goal, feel stuck in unfulfilling relationships, or can recognize recurring patterns in your life. You may be trying to disrupt intergenerational cycles of abuse of simply wanting to connect more deeply with your family and loved ones. I work with people who are establishing healthier behaviors in their life, coping with grief or trauma, exploring changes during the perinatal period, or seeking more fulfillment in their relationships.

I believe a person’s identity, values and beliefs guide their path of healing. Therapy can be a way of liberating ourselves from limiting ideas, societal messages, oppression and isolation. I see you as the expert in your experience and collaborate with you to develop a space to learn and grow. My therapeutic approach is both systemic and person-centered with a focus on inherent strengths and resilience. I pull from relational, attachment, family systems, racial trauma and polyvagal theories while using such modalities as ACT, DBT, CBT, TCI-F and Motivational Interviewing. I also draws, when appropriate, from my own experience.

I enjoy working with couples and families, including polyamorous relationships and nontraditional family structures.
My approach to therapy starts with the person or the people in front of me. I aim to collaborate on goals based on what each client wants; I have found that, much of the time, people are simply stuck in current patterns due to their personal histories and changing environments, and they need help finding new ways to exist in their situations. Oftentimes, people find that they are still working with parts of themselves that are stuck in the past. Each person knows themself and their parts best, and, together, we use this knowledge to move forward.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
