My areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, family and relationship issues, perinatal mental health, and trauma.
My practice prioritizes women and femmes. My therapeutic approach is collaborative and relational from both a trauma informed and feminist orientation. I believe that we are all resilient, each of us has unique strengths. I work with my clients to build on these strengths, increase their insight, and develop the trust needed to achieve their goals. I do this by providing a safe space in which you may process your experiences, express your feelings, challenge unhealthy relationship patterns, and develop self-awareness.

I am continuing my specialized training in mind-body approaches including Internal Family Systems.
Throughout our lives, we are wounded in big and small ways in our relationships. I believe that healing these wounds must happen in relationships, as well. In my eyes, that’s what therapy is all about. I am particularly experienced in working with people who struggle with disordered eating and eating disorders using Health At Every Size principles. I enjoy working with LGBTQ+ people and those engaged in nontraditional shapes of relationships. I also support people with mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis, and substance use.

I have both personal and professional experience with this issue, and I am happy to help you navigate through it.

Dr. Zahtz believes that therapy is a fluid process, there is no “one size fits all”. In her work with children, adolescents, and families she very much views each individual and/or family as their own entity with their own experiences, thoughts, feelings, ways of interacting, and values. Therefore, her approach to therapy is to first gain an empathic understanding of the entity that is in front of her and then determine what approach or approaches may be the most helpful for that individual situation.

I am honored to accompany people on the very personal journey of growth & healing. Life is not easy; it takes courage to share your vulnerabilities in order to unpack hurt, identify inner strengths, and create solutions towards change. My first step is to truly understand your experiences, your perspective on the world, and the unique intersecting identities you bring into the therapeutic space so that I may offer insights or strategies specific to your situation & personality. I frequently treat self-esteem, shame, identity or relationship concerns, women's issues, codependency, and those with a history of abuse or family violence.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
