"The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking." - Albert Einstein I feel honored to have the privilege to be part of people's decision to improve their lives and create new beginnings. Utilizing individual, family, and couples psychotherapy I help people uncover patterns that may be holding them back. Together we work towards implementing strategies to find balance, confidence, and joy. My therapeutic approach includes the building of insight, cognitive and/or behavioral strategies, and the healing experience of a collaborative and compassionate relationship.

I specialize in helping young women "get unstuck” and heal from perfectionism, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, family issues, and relationship issues.
“I don’t feel seen.” “Opening up is scary.” “I feel stuck, and I don’t know what to do.” So many of us have had experiences—like relationship issues, anxiety, low self-esteem, and past trauma—that leave us feeling just like those quotes: alone and confused. As a therapist, I’m passionate about helping clients like you feel seen, heard, and supported as you get clear on what’s holding you back and learn new ways to move forward.

Hello! I am Alex Hopkins of Early Connections Child & Family Counseling. I specialize in counseling boys ages 8-18, and young men ages 19-22. Many of the young people I work with are recovering from trauma, and need a safe place to heal. Others are struggling to fit in with their peers, and need to know they're not alone. Some of them are navigating the tricky waters of sexual development, or identify as LGBTQ+ and need a place where they are welcomed and affirmed. A lot of the young people I work with feel anxious and/or depressed and want to feel hopeful again. All of the people I work with want to feel safe, seen, and secure.

When you’re going through a life transition, it is difficult to find your footing. Whether you chose this change or not, it seems one area of life has shaken your whole world. It's had an impact at home, in relationships, with family, at school, or work. You feel alone and confused. You want to enjoy the present and feel hopeful, instead of constantly playing over what you could have done differently. You want to stop feeling so raw and vulnerable.

My practice is rooted in Liberation Psychology and Family Systems approaches. Whether you are seeking family therapy, trauma-focused therapy, or support for your anxiety or depression, I collaborate with you to achieve your treatment goals. I believe all people have an innate capacity to grow, heal, and change if they are provided a safe and supportive environment. I help people gain awareness of how and why they have lost access to meaningful parts of themselves, find ways to remove obstacles to emotional growth, and move towards feeling more connected.

I'm here to walk alongside you on the journey, helping you tap into your own strengths and wisdom and find solutions that feel authentic and manageable for your family.
"My child doesn't know how to regulate their emotions." I hear this a lot. And it's true. No one is born knowing how to regulate their emotions, and most of us who are adults now were never actually taught, we just did our best to figure it out, and now we're trying to pass on the skill to small, emotionally volatile people with half-baked nervous systems. Yeah. If it feels hard, it's because it IS. And if you have a child with some extra emotional sensitivity or sensory processing differences or neurodivergence or a trauma history or big life changes, it's even harder. And now YOUR nervous system is frayed.

I believe that everyone, regardless of background, family history or identity, deserves acceptance, love and peace of mind.
I know firsthand what it feels like to show up for myself, even when I don’t feel it. As a Black woman, I understand how hard it is to live authentically in a society that makes you feel like you aren’t enough. My ideal client is someone who lives at the intersection of multiple minority identities. I enjoy helping individuals cope with stress, anxiety, depression, issues related to identity and the impact of organized religion. I prioritize Black women & Black Queer folx in my work.

Children, teens, and young adults struggling with anxiety and difficult life transitions know that it can feel overwhelming, stressful and may feel worried that no one will understand how they feel. This may affect friendships, relationships with family members, school and work experiences, and many other areas of life. Therapy can help decrease anxiety and worries by teaching new coping skills to better manage anxiety and stress. This can lead to feeling a greater sense of self control, happiness and well being.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
