I am an Internal Family Systems trained clinician and I welcome the opportunity to share this perspective with clients.
You may be here because you are struggling with feeling like your mental health concerns are controlling your life. Or that your grief from losing a loved one or many loved ones has become too much to bear. Maybe you and your partner have reached a level of conflict that is too painful for both of you. My goal is to listen with an open heart and mind and to be your guide as you move through the healing process. I believe that each person has the capacity to heal themselves, and with a therapist walking alongside you, that healing can be both powerful and long-lasting.

My services allow for individuals, couples and family members to gain insight and feel empowered to cope with and support loved ones or themselves managing a Mental Health issue and/or Substance Abuse.
Just like diet and exercise is for your body, therapy is for your mind and emotions. As a therapist, my goal is to support you on your journey of understanding your true self and desires. While your past cannot be changed it also does not have to determine your future and with proper support you can stop reliving past choices. Using various clinical approaches, we will work together to help you (1) understanding your current symptoms and (2) develop a path forward. In my work with clients, I utilize motivational interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Life can be challenging, and we are not always equipped with the tools to deal with it in the best way possible. Sometimes work, family, school, anxiety, depression, trauma, lack of self-worth, unhealthy coping skills, & all sorts of other things can overwhelm us & impact how we handle what comes our way. If you are feeling stuck, unsure, having challenges at work, school, or home that are leading to feelings of low self-worth, anxiety and/or depression, talking to someone could help ease some of these symptoms, burdensome thoughts and unpleasant feelings.

I have worked with individuals, couples and families in a wide variety of settings for over 25 years. During this time, I have developed a number of particular specialties, including adolescents and families, boys and men, and addiction treatment. Typically, I offer a 3-session initial evaluation, at the end of which I make treatment recommendations. If the recommendation is to continue treatment in my practice, I can work in a variety of modes - individual, couples and family - and emphasize strategies that mobilize relationships and problem solving.

My name is Julie Campana and I am a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor. I have been working in the field since 2017, while also continuing my work in the public school system. My mental health background ranges from inpatient hospital work, grief and loss counseling, to children and family counseling. Recently, I have moved to working as a therapist fulltime as I realized the tremendous need for support with how prevalent mental illness and trauma are today. I've seen how both can truly impact the human life, from early childhood to old age and how vital it is to have a listening ear without fear of judgement.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
