Through this work, I developed a strong interest in family therapy and enjoy working with the family unit on effective communication skills and stress reduction/coping skills.
“Warm and compassionate with a no-nonsense approach” is how my clients describe me. I have been working with children and adolescents for over 25 years and as a licensed clinical social worker for 15 years. I provide therapy to children, adolescents, adults and families. My broad range of experience includes helping clients struggling with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, gender identity & issues related to sexual orientation. I have the unique experience of guiding families through grief and issues related to chronic illness such as HIV and cancer. Often, I engage the whole family to address communication barriers.

I’m the founder and director of The Center for Family Well-Being, where we aim -- through our groups, individual therapy, and classes -- to help kids, teens, adults, couples, and families fully realize their potential with confidence, understanding, and an open heart. We're a group of highly-trained holistic therapists who integrate Western psychotherapy with the wisdom of Eastern mindful awareness practice, as well as other mind-body healing methods, for greater awareness, connection, and well-being for our clients -- within themselves and with others in their lives.

Whether your family is dealing with anxiety, grief, or simply neurodivergence in a not-very-accommodating world, I feel confident that we can get to a happier, healthier future, together.
I'm a therapist committed to serving queer and trans youth, and all young people, with respect, compassion, and attentiveness. I specialize in helping kids with self-regulation, anxiety management, and processing grief and trauma. I work to build collaborative relationships with kids and their parents to create a safe(r) space where kids can get the support they need. In therapy, they will learn new skills and work on changing patterns that no longer work for them.

I have provided individual, group, couples and family therapy in both school settings as well as private practice settings since the onset of my career. I utilize behavioral management tools, cognitive behavioral therapy, and creative therapies to encourage and teach children as well as adults, how to increase their sense of self and learn how to celebrate their strengths and weaknesses. I feel strongly that children respond best when they are free to explore their feelings creatively as opposed to solely participating in talk therapy. I help clients feel accountable and more importantly, recognize they have the ability to grow.

Are you suffering from the effects of PTSD, anxiety, depression, sudden loss, and/or chronic pain? If so body-oriented psychotherapy may help facilitate your recovery. By working to address the root causes of nervous system imbalance, a body-psychotherapy approach can empower you with tools and skills to re-negotiate and resolve difficult and traumatic experiences. My approach in therapy is client-centered and my work is just to facilitate and provide the optimal conditions for healing to take place. I also hope to impart knowledge and skills for people to work with themselves effectively outside of therapy.

12/21/2023- Yes, we are currently accepting new clients. Welcome to A Fresh Start Therapy. FYI: This time of year is difficult for many as we get less sunlight and our days are shorter. Both Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Major Depressive Disorder flare up in the Fall. Consider making a small change in your environment like adding art to your sleeping area or tossing a piece of furniture or decor that no longer fits who you are. Making subtle updates to your home or work space can improve your mood a bit. Give it a try!

I work with clients from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, who have all come to a shared realization: that their way of living is no longer working for them. Whether they are struggling with addiction or depression or find themselves experiencing relationship difficulties, they all aspire to something new; something more. Together we identify the nature of their particular dissatisfaction, discover how they got there, and develop a more desirable and sustainable reality. I believe that my role is to be a nonjudgmental companion to my clients on their unique journey of self-discovery and profound change.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
