In that time, I have worked providing individual, family and couples counseling to people from all different age populations.
Counseling focuses on resolving internal conflict, improving personal insight, developing more effective coping skills, and improving the quality of relationships with both one's self and others . Counseling can help to stimulate positive change, while developing healthier communication and conflict resolution skills. Are you individually struggling with depression, anxiety or anger? Counseling provides a safe therapeutic environment for clients to explore emotional triggers, thoughts, and feelings associated with those negative emotions, while also teaching effective coping skills to manage the emotional dysregulation.

Change is inevitable but necessary. Adulthood, for example, can be tough for young people. I understand the roller coaster of emotions & challenges that come with transitioning into adulthood. The daily stress of excelling in high school & college. The pressure of choosing the right career. The confusion, frustration & uncertainty of trying to navigate modern dating & relationships. The realities of starting a family. Dealing with problematic relationships at work. The pressure of becoming independent & successful in our culture can be overbearing and often leads to burnout, anxiety, feeling lost & not good enough, or perfectionism.

My specialties include couples therapy, family conflict, issues related to child custody, mood and anxiety disorders, trauma and children with special needs.
In my experience, I find that people seek out therapy to discover ways to cope with, regulate and resolve difficult emotional states and to improve interpersonal relationships. The conflict that is both within ourselves and in our interactions with others, is a part of life that can be highly distressing but can also open up opportunities for positive growth and change. Our lives are full of rich and complex experiences and sometimes we move through them so quickly that we do not have the time to understand or to appreciate the deeper meaning and insight that they can bring.

There are times in life when we can feel off balance and can't seem to snap out of it. When our own natural support system just isn't enough, it may be time to reach out to a professional and start the process of therapy to regain the joy of living. As I begin to work with you as one of my clients, we will not just talk, but work together towards creating lasting and sustainable results. I believe that you should always guide the process of your therapy and I encourage that in our sessions. I always strive to create a positive therapeutic relationship with my clients and will treat you with dignity and compassion.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist, I work with clients of all ages who need help and support in the areas of stress management, relationship discord, parenting, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, and adjustment to life transitions, such as divorce, the diagnosis of a serious illness, and empty nest.
To be heard and understood is one of our most basic, fundamental human needs. Losses, life transitions, relationships, and even extended periods of stress can cause us to feel confused, overwhelmed, and even hopeless. You are not alone if you have found yourself struggling in any of these areas. My primary goal is to welcome you into a safe and collaborative space where personal growth can be fostered, and hope can begin.

I have always been led to the power of the mind and the cause/effect of family and other relationships on our mental health.
I am Dr. Ann Susan Murphy, PsyD; I hold a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, have an MFT license, and an MS in Sec. Ed, an MA in Counseling Psyc and a BS in Fash. Merch/Social Sciences. I can see the potential for true health in every individual and am positive and excited about each client I see. I believe in the power of the mind. I prefer Psychodynamic Therapy, as this gets quickly to the underlying cause, the real issue (s) blocking us from living to our full potential. Everyone needs to briefly uncover perceptions from the past and recognize how these perceptions can block us from living a balanced life in the present.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
