I appreciate the opportunity to journey alongside you and/or your family during the season of life that you find yourself in.
There are times in our lives when we need a compssionate ear with empathy and validation to sit with you during certain seasons of life. I have a wealth of experience working with diverse, evolved, economic social groups and varied ages of children and adults throughout my career. It is a pleasure to serve families as a whole as well as individuals as they need with my guided expertise to see people land where they desire and deserve to be. Therapy should be an opportunity to have someone you trust journey alongside your process with humilty, respect and encouragement. Together, we can achieve all that is possible.

Do you turn to food, alcohol, or drugs to deal with feeling lonely or rejected, or to cope with added stress and anxiety? Have you lost the joyful feelings that you used to have in life? Do you feel fear stricken, even in the “comfort” of your own home? Do you feel like there are so many things to manage and your forever growing “to do list” leaves you feeling completely overwhelmed? I work with women who have experienced tough stuff in their childhood and feel like they have lost their way. Sometimes we turn to food, alcohol, and drugs or, we withdraw from friends and family, just to cope. Does this sound like you?

Together we'll process feelings and identify needs that are getting in the way of your family's peace.
You are worried about your child. They have started to show signs of anxiety or depression which is starting to make you concerned. You try to lighten the mood when you can, but it is getting harder everyday. You never know what might make them upset and feel completely lost on what to do. You feel bad about the tension in the home and hate arguing with them, but sometimes its's the only thing you can do to get them to listen. You feel worried about what they may be thinking or doing like self-harm or suicidal thoughts and that terrifies you.

My experience started in 2010, working in an inpatient facility for an eating disorder residential program for about two years. From there, I moved on to working as a therapist at a residential program treating adolescents with dual diagnoses. I also opened my private practice at that time and saw clients remotely. Currently, I’m working at Sober Living, helping adults deal with various addictions And mental health as well as seeing couples, families, and individuals through Telehealth. The modalities that I use often are CBT, DBT solution focus, and psychodynamic.

Life is exciting and beautiful. And, at the same time it can be painful and chaotic. There are parts of us who want to run away, who want to feel better, or just want to give up. Many of us have the pieces of our puzzle, but we may be looking for a missing piece, or cannot see the full picture. That is where my passion to come alongside you belongs. I enjoy looking at the pieces together with you, putting them into perspective, curiously looking for a missing piece, and finding the spot that “fits best” and feels right. My strategy is to collaborate with you because “you know you best.”

Hello, my name is William Wendelaar (but you can call me "Billie" if you would like!) and I'm an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor currently practicing in Sacramento, California. I practice primarily from a person-centered or humanistic orientation. What this means is that I firmly believe in the importance of the therapeutic alliance and that each client is the expert on themself. However, I also offer my outside perspective and expertise to help my clients with their presenting difficulties using tools from various forms of CBT, mindfulness, and self-compassion.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
