I offer individual, couples counseling, and family psychotherapy for adults over 18 years old. I aim to help clients learn a deeper understanding of their dignity and worth. I believe in the concept of treating the mind, body, and spirit in unity in order to become the best version of ourselves. I believe that life experiences have helped me to have a deeper understanding of how the human person grows and flourishes and would like to bring that hope into every counseling session.

My specialties are couples' issues; family dysfunction including adult children of alcoholics; addictions; depression; anxiety; geriatric issues; adult ADD; and stress.
I have practiced psychology in the Annapolis area for almost 29 years. Currently I have offices in Annapolis and Kent Island. The slogan you will see in my telephone directory ads is: "Life's too Short to be Unhappy.'' I live by this slogan and encourage patients to do the same. I do my best work with patients who are motivated to make changes and who are open to a direct approach. I always provide input to patients and encourage interaction with the goal of solving problems. I work with adults of all ages and adolescents. I have enjoyed many successful treatment outcomes.

Whether you have experienced a single traumatic event or trauma throughout your life, we will work together to develop a plan that will relieve your trauma symptoms and provide you with a future that is free from your trauma.

The investment you make in learning couples dialogue will also carry over into family and work relationships.
I bring a wide range of life experiences as well as a significant depth of education in Imago Relationship theory to the couples I counsel. I promote and respect each partner's individual worldview. My hope is that my couples celebrate the differences that each partner brings to their union. I facilitate a dialogue process that can be incorporated into the couple's relationship toolbox. In trusting the process of dialogue, I find that the couple shifts from distance to connection when they learn the "real story" as to why their partner's behavior or reactive energy occurs.

Do you need motivation to make healthier decisions? Are you unhappy with your job and ready to make a change? Are you looking to set healthy boundaries with your family or friends? Do you want to go back to school? Are you having difficulty moving on from a relationship or finding a relationship? Do you want to communicate better with your partner?.
Hi, I'm Shawna! Congratulations on taking the first step towards making some life changes. I understand because I've been there. Sometimes we all need a little support in achieving our goals. That’s just fine because life can be overwhelming. Often we just need a bit of guidance finding the answers that are already inside of us and that’s when coaching can be helpful. The coaching process works well in any area of your life you want to develop or change. The hardest part is taking the first step.

In working with youth and families in different capacities I have come to help youth and families and couples work through the pain of the past specifically dealing with divorce, ADHD, family dynamics and dysfunction, depression and anxiety.
In life there are many awesome and beautiful things to see and do, but there are also many challenges and pain in life. As I have worked with youth and families for over 15 years, I have come to understand that deep down everyone wants to thrive through being loved and to love others, but that often hurt and pain from our younger days place us in a position of just surviving. My hope is to help youth, families and couples to heal from these wounds to move toward thriving.

I wanted to get into the mental health field from a young age, as I was always surrounded by friends and family who struggled with mental health.
I am a Licensed Social Worker with a passion for decreasing the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting the health and well being of my clients. For my undergraduate degree, I moved from Central Jersey (Yes! It exists!) to South Jersey to attend Stockton University. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work with a Minor in Behavioral Neuroscience from Stockton, and then moved on to attend graduate school in Philadelphia. I received my Master of Social Work Degree with a clinical concentration from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice in May of 2020.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
