I can support the adoptees integration into their family while examining and understanding their past circumstances.
I believe that the power of therapy comes through the understanding of how self defeating patterns of behavior interfere with our ability to have a happy and productive life. I believe that focusing and building on our strengths will enhance our functioning. Examining our behavior is critical to developing healthy options for ourselves and in our relationships. Through an open and respectful process we will examine the areas in your life that have interfered with your ability to make positive, forward thinking choices. As you develop different coping strategies the hope of change will support healing and growth.

A guiding principle for me is a quote from my Nana- “we are all here to help each other through.” For every one of us there is a time when extra support is beneficial. I bring over ten years of experience working with children, teenagers, and young adults in the greater Baltimore area. Working collaboratively with clients I use evidence-based practices including CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and client-centered therapy. Additionally, I have training in animal-assisted therapy and have my dog, Marlow, join in on some sessions if desired.

Are you concerned about changes in yourself or loved one that may be suggestive of a neurodegenerative condition or dementia? As a formally trained clinical neuropsychologist, I have specialized expertise in understanding brain-behavior relationships. I believe that anyone who wants to make a change in their life can do it. My style is laid back, with an emphasis on listening and getting to know the client on their own terms, and assisting them with self expression when needed. My orientation is self psychological and relational. For some issues, I find that a more structured, directed approach is helpful. I have recently incorporated DBT skills groups into my practice.

It takes a lot of courage to seek help, especially in a world that unfairly stigmatizes getting psychological services. Lack of understanding of what therapy is and how people can benefit from it prevents some from using professional services to know and understand themselves better, to improve relationships, and to live more meaningful, fulfilling lives regardless of their challenges. Sometimes people have troubling symptoms due to anxiety, depression, and other disorders and need help to address these symptoms and their causes. I use a variety of approaches to help clients. My goal is to empower clients through a healthy, therapeutic relationship.

Parenting a child who has temper tantrums is difficult. You may find yourself frequently correcting your child for acting before he/she thinks about what is going on. Raising a child who is diagnosed with autism, developmental delays, or intellectual delays can be hard to manage. Your child may excel at school but then struggles with worry beyond what is appropriate for the situation back at home. Not to mention the worry or depression you may be feeling as the parent trying to juggle everything. It is time to find the help you need.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
