Accepting New Clients - You’re someone who is strong and accomplished but find yourself often overthinking and feeling out-of-step. Work is your passion, but your workplace leaves you feeling stressed, on edge, and constantly asking if you're doing enough. The cycle of just trying to get through the week is burning you out. But you’re ready to make a change. You’re ready to start looking forward to the next day with anticipation instead of dread. Most of all, you’re ready to live the balanced life you want - one where when the work day ends, there is time and energy for the people and things that you love. Let me help you get there.

One of the hardest steps in the therapeutic process is this right here.. reaching out for help, for change. My role as a psychotherapist is to collectively work together to establish and meet personal goals in a safe, supportive environment that fosters healing and growth. I aim to provide clients the opportunity to explore and express their feelings to make life long changes that they ultimately feel good about. It is never too late to make a change or to begin the healing process.

You wish your child would follow the bedtime or breakfast routine better. Your child seems unable to communicate, problem solve, reflect, or play with friends. Your child has difficulty with homework or following rules. Your child gets into trouble at school or with the kids on the block. You want your child to learn the art of communication, how to express their emotions in appropriate ways or to understand other people’s feelings. Your child needs help! You have tried everything you know including interventions. You feel frustrated and emotionally drained. You agonize about their behavior that is affecting the rest of the family.

Adolescence is a complex journey; one that can trigger intense feelings of sadness frustration, self doubt, loneliness and fear. Without the proper tools to navigate these roads, a young female can find herself entangled in darkness. Although this period in her life will pass, the residual effect of her decisions and experiences as a teenager, can impact the path she continues on throughout her lifetime. Now more than ever, your daughter needs the appropriate support as she works to gain a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of herself and the world around her.

Grounded in traditional evidence based therapy modalities learned while acquiring my LCSW, my additional education and certification in complementary and alternative medicine as well as spiritual psychology also allows us to explore additional creative and holistic methods to achieving overall wellness. My approach is to “meet clients where they are” with an initial goal of stabilization and helping the client to feel safety within themselves.

I have been the leading provider of socialization groups for children with ADHD, Anxiety, and Autistic Spectrum Disorder in Monmouth County for the past 20 years. Every child can learn ways to interact positively with other children. By using a combination of play therapy, dance/movement therapy, and cognitive-behavioral strategies in the groups, children learn to be successful with their peers. I offer individual counseling sessions on parenting issues and for those children that need help with selective mutism, anxiety, and specific behavior issues not applicable to the group situation.

Lighthouse Counseling & Sand Play Training Center, LLC was conceived in 2000 in a tiny office in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey by Gretchen Morgan and Mary Pat McGeehin. Their search for effective treatment led them to include the use of Sand Play Therapy, EMDR, yoga and therapeutic group work with their clients. This was in response to the expanding body of research which illustrated that the mind-body connection was integral to the healing of mental health issues. In 2004, they expanded their practice to include like-minded affiliate clinicians and moved to a larger facility in Eatontown, New Jersey.

Teens and young adults trying to find their way in the world are under great pressure these days. I specialize in the transition from the last few years of high school to whatever comes next, and post-college transitions. Sometimes, young adults can be critical of themselves. They may struggle with relationships, uncertain of the rules for healthy versus unhealthy dynamics. They may feel alienated or have uncertain goals. Thought patterns might seem circular, annoying, or just unhelpful. ("Am I too much? I can't measure up, am not good enough.") I can help provide direction and guidance through these periods of transition.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
