I have additional training and use other modalities such as expressive arts, DBT, polyvagal, parts work and incorporate those as needed.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor in both Alaska and Oregon. I have a MA in Counseling Psychology from Pacific University in 2007, and have worked in the mental health field for nearly 20 years. I use a trauma informed framework and believe in the intrinsic ability for each individual to heal, find their own path and create a life of meaning. It is possible to go from merely just surviving and coping, to thriving. Generational healing, changing patterns and post traumatic growth is absolutely attainable.

My approach combines elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, expressive arts therapy, and positive psychology.
Life happens in unexpected ways. Whether adjusting to a sudden life change or a known life transition, you may be feeling emotionally overwhelmed and exhausted. The time period of transitioning to adulthood is stressful enough and dealing with anxiety, hopeless feelings, or just uncertainty on how to move forward can make it unbearable. Many adults have found help by reaching out and working with a therapist. There is an opportunity to learn and grow from your experience. Maya Angelou says, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”

As someone who has experienced past sexual / physical abuse, or chronic illness, do you often wonder how you can move past the overwhelming shame and pain? Have you tried “everything” but nothing seems to alleviate the flashbacks or unwanted memories. Do you want to stop dissociating? Do you long be free of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts; longing for connection, worthiness, and to tell your story with a safe, non-judgmental person. Are you willing to examine thoughts, emotions, behaviors and learn how to utilize your whole self, develop shame resilience—transforming the way you live & love in your current relationships?

Are you creative and intelligent, but organizationally challenged, sitting at Procrastination Station, tired of losing things, forgetting appointments and deadlines, a little bit like Dory in Finding Nemo with the short term memory loss? Do you struggle with self confidence, depression and anxiety when you don’t quite fit in with neurotypical linear thought patterns? Do you feel isolated, judged, and very misunderstood by family members, coworkers, and well meaning friends who offer you advice and simple solutions that just don’t work? Maybe it’s someone in your family facing these struggles. You are not alone.

Life feels overwhelming! You are anxious, depressed, and pandemic-recovery/adjustment. Maybe you have chronic fatigue or a mystery illness on top of it. You feel scattered, exhausted, deflated, unmotivated, and struggling. You're in a dark hole. There is so much uncertainty and you are SO TIRED and FRUSTRATED!! You just want to be able to decompress and find some relief. You need a place to breathe so you can catch your breath, release all this anxiety, lift your mood and have the space to process all this and plan your next steps. Life doesn't have to be this hard and you are not alone. Create a life you love.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
